That's why I thought that converting to float should work, since presentation in FLOAT-mode works.

Ie that the (correct) internal value would be converted to float, but it does not. Even going from HEX-mode to float fails in the same way (or 0x6F is converted to 105.0000), so the value is internally "presented" as decimal and that value is then converted to float ...
