17B vs 12C
Hi all.

Was just wondering… Was the 17B and its revisions intended to supersede the 12C?

For me, it played a great role for 10 years but since the 1990s, the HP 12c is an overrated calculator

I can't believe, it's still an finance or business standard.

12c is the single best calculator ever made. Hope it's the standard for the next 25 years. Otherwise, Excel will take over...

After using them, I think the HP 17bii or HP 17bii+ are much superior.

Even the hp 10bii+ does almost the same thing as the hp 12C, better and simpler.

RE: 17B vs 12C
The 17B seems to be a menu-driven calculator, something like the 42S simulator that I've used for a while.

But I do like the 12C's "what you see is what you get" keypad layout.

Unless I need some functions that the 12C doesn't have, I think I will still use the 12C for it being smaller and more robust.

Sort of. HP wanted to replace the 12C, and their first attempt was the 18C, which evolved into the 19B and 19BII, and spun off the 17B and 17BII, while the 10B and 14B were on a somewhat independent development path.

However, none of these were actually a functional superset of the 12C, so the 12C continued selling well, much to HP's chagrin.

In the 1990s, HP made a prototype of a 12C using a Saturn processor rather than the Nut, and reportedly did some focus group testing, but decided not to introduce it.

That left the 12C mostly unchanged from the early 1990s to around 2008, and of course, HP sitll makes a 12C, as well as the 12C Platinum and 12C Prestige.

It's a 12C Platinum inside with a gold/bronze-tinted bezel color, and it says "HP 12c Prestige Financial Calculator" on the upper right area of the bezel. It was only made, and only sold, in Brazil. Functionally no different than the then-current 12CP, but only a limited qty were made/sold, so they are rather expensive these days. Not sure how long it was made, but at least 2006-2008.

Too bad Brazil isn’t part of the US. Maybe that’s why I’ve never heard of it.

RE: 17B vs 12C
I would have liked the 19B in the form of the 17B.
