HP-50G case puzzle
On my HP-50G CNA312xxxx back case there is the moulded imprint:

HPK-49GPLUS(B)

In the plastic at the bottom - will post picture if will be useful.

this isn't on my earlier (2010) device... other than that cases seem identical.

Do they share the same back casing as 49G+?

I used to believe the older 50g units have this, and newer ones don't, but your suggestion that only the newer ones have it seems to be confirmed by my units.

My machines show:
CNA634xxxxx, NO (2006)
CNA702xxxxx, NO (2007)
CNA229xxxx, YES (2012)
CNA231xxxx, YES (2012)
Blue 50g, no s/n, NO (no idea of year of mfr; I had assumed these were later than 2010, but perhaps not)

Also, I have 3 x HP49g+ machines that do not have this on the case back, which also supports the idea that older machines do not include this, which is contrary to what seems intuitive.

"HPK" is the moniker for Hewlett Packard Korea, though I've never heard of any involvement of HPK in calculator development, so this is probably not related.

Edit: Corrected number of digits for unit # during week of mfr.

RE: HP-50G case puzzle
Perhaps internally the 50G was actually revision B of the 49G+ but to sell it they decided another 49 would be too confusing and also not a good selling point so they named it the 50G, this must must have slipped through?

This is just a guess as I have never owned a 49G+ device!

RE: HP-50G case puzzle
The 49g+ case is similar but definitely not the same. The 50g takes 4 batteries while the 49g+ took only 3, so the battery cover is larger on the 50g. The 49g+ back also had a lot more details about FCC and Canadian EMC compliance.

Here's the "HPK-49GPLUS(B)" info from my collection:
49g+ CN334xxxxx (2003) nothing similar
50g CNA710xxxxx (2007) NO
50g CNA820xxxxx (2008) NO
50g CNA450xxxxx (2014) YES

RE: HP-50G case puzzle
Interesting....

All of the below are HP50g units:

CNA2240xxx, YES
CNA2290xxx, YES
CNA4471xxx, YES
CNA4471xxx, YES
CNA7330xxxx, NO
CNA9420xxxx, NO
No serial number, NO
Blue, no serial number, NO

It looks like it's the earlier serial numbers that carry this indication. They also have one less digit in them.

Yet another data point:

CNA4471xxx, YES.

Keep in mind the 50g was sold 2006-2015, and the initial digit of the SN is the last digit of the year, so that puts your units into the following order, oldest to newest:

CNA7330xxxx, NO (2007)
CNA9420xxxx, NO (2009)
CNA2240xxx, YES (2012)
CNA2290xxx, YES (2012)
CNA4471xxx, YES (2014)
CNA4471xxx, YES (2014)

which is consistent with units above, and implies newer units have the 49g+ stamp. Also, the '0' and '1' characters (in the 7th place of the sn) are part of the unit number.

I believe the units with 5 digits for unit # included only numbers, whereas those with only 4 places included numbers and letters.

Thanks for the correction. This does, of course, make sense, although HP would have had a problem if they had continued producing the 50g into 2016 and later Smile

This is consistent with the serial numbers of my units.

RE: HP-50G case puzzle
I have a CNA 7330xxxx "no".

Like it's leather-like case with magnetic snap to close case.

Still use it for statistical calculations with 31X24 matrices for hourly climatological calculations!

RE: HP-50G case puzzle
hmm, not sure what to make of mine, then, which is:

CNA6280XXX YES

i.e. it does have the molding. I had thought mine was from 2016, not 2006, though.

But there are some letters in the XXX part, right? That would fit the later pattern.

RE: HP-50G case puzzle
Mine's CNA437nCCC (2014, 37th week and nCCC serial number—not the real one, just number and three letters), and has the HPK-49GPLUS(B). I was wondering how those serial numbers were decoded until this thread was started. The serial number certainly matches the date I bought the calculator (November 2014), though I'm amused that it was a stick-on label, not impressed into the plastic like my 9750G+.

As ijabbott noted, if the sequence number has letters then this does match the later style; I'd take this as additional proof (another recent thread had some similar examples) that there were some production runs done in 2016, or at least that some runs were made at some point with 2016 serial number codes.

Yes, both of mine have letters: CNA62800M0 & CNA62800JR.

In the HP Warranty checker, the start date for both is 16th July 2016, which is in week 28, so that seems to fit.

Both have the 49GPLUS(B) moulding, with white serial number stickers.

[although that may have been my example in that other thread Smile]

CDMACKAY,

Your's and mine, since I think you also got them as last in stock from Oxford Educational.
I am 90%+ certain they were made in 2016.
It has the 49G+ ark.

Thanks. Yes, I got both of mine from James at Oxford Ed, and my Prime G2 too. Very helpful.
