Comparison table for the HP-32S, HP-32SII, HP 35S & HP-42S (Added HP-15C, DM32, DM42)
*** EDIT: ***
I have created a new HP and SwissMicros calculator comparison table with more models in it. It *currently* includes the following calculator models:
HP-15C, HP-32S, HP-32SII, DM32, HP 35S, HP-42S and DM42.

I will be adding more models over time. Please let me know if there are any errors or omissions. This is a work in progressSmile

Here is the link to the new Calculator Comparison Table:
HP Plus Calculator Comparison Table

*** Original post with old table ***
Someone on a Facebook Group recently asked about the differences between the HP-32SII, HP 35S and HP-42S. The Calculator Comparison feature on this site does not have any information on the HP-32SII and HP 35S so I created a custom comparison table and added those models to it. The following PDF document compares the features of the following four HP calculator models: HP-32S, HP-32SII, HP 35S and HP-42S. If you see any errors or omissions, please let me know so I can update the document.

Last line on page 4, it says that the 32SII has 7 flags. Should say 12 (0 through 11).

Joe,
Thank you. I have updated the PDF document to correct this error. I also updated the weights of the various models to reflect more accurate information (Thanks HPMike). I have also corrected the introduction year on the HP-32SII to 1991.

RE: Comparison table for the HP-32S, HP-32SII, HP 35S and HP-42S
Nice table !

Some comments:
  • in "Display and Keyboard" it could be useful to mention that the 42S offers a customizable User menu.
  • in "Units Conversions" Millimeter / Inches is listed for the 35S, this is wrong, it is Centimeter / Inches as for the 32SII.
  • in "Memory and Programming" I don’t understand why there is a Yes for the 42S in Manual register/program memory allocation.
  • in "Memory and Programming" you may add a * after Yes for the 32S and 32SII for Alpha messages and prompts in programs, as this is done with Equations and is described in the notes at the end of the table

In 'HP-42S Notes':
  • Data types were real, complex, string and alpha either string or alpha - they are the same?
  • Only single numbers could be stored in numeric registers strings can also be stored in numeric registers, provided they have not been converted to complex

Nice job!
You could even add "Free42" and "Plus42" columns.
With Free42 you could add string and list types support. (and even lines for local variables!).
With Plus42 you could add equations and units support (and even lines for plotting and directories!)

Werner,
Thank you. I updated the HP-42S notes to be more in line with the description of the data types (real, complex, alpha strings and matrices) and storage options described on page 60 of the HP-42S manual. I also updated the HP 35S notes to describe its data types (real, complex and vectors) and storage options.

Thank you. I use Plus42 a lot and really enjoy it. I might add Free42 and Plus42 columns at some point.

RE: Comparison table for the HP-32S, HP-32SII, HP 35S and HP-42S
Thank you very much for this. Might it be possible to add the SwissMicros DM32 to this table? (That is, if it offers anything more than the 32Sii in terms of functions: the official HP blurb suggests the 35S had "over 100 functions" whereas the DM32 is advertised as having 171 functions, not all of which are accessible directly from the keyboard of course, but it would be good to know how many of the 171 are not available on the 35S, for instance.)

No problemSmile
I am considering adding the DM32 and DM42 to the comparison table since they are physical calculators.

At the moment, the DM 32 is a complete simulation of the HP-32SII with the following enhancements:
* Larger multi-line display with multiple fonts (shows all 4 stack registers plus time/date).
* 34-digit mantissa precision (exponent ±6145).
* USB-C connectivity to internal mass storage device.
* A calculator multi-state system allows switching between virtual calculators.
* Onboard hypertext help file.
* Much faster performance (approximately 100X program speed).
* Much more memory for program/equation storage (439 kB vs 384 bytes).

SwissMicros has a nice table of the DM32 enhancements over the legacy HP-32SII in their on-line DM32 User Manual.

We can't blame SwissMicros (the table is about enhancements) but some features are missing in the hardware comparison:
- power consumption and expected battery lifetime,
- weight,
- keyboard.

Keyboard quality is difficult to quantify, but attempts have been made to measure the key pressure.

Adding HP15 / DM15L / HP15LE / HP15CE would also be nice

... and all dimensions in ISO units please.
