Do inline image attachments work?

How do you get the image to display inline? I clicked insert attachment into post but it shows as a link.

But it doesn't appear to work with BMP files.

A JPEG. But I guess PNG and GIF work as well.
Not sure if you could cheat and upload a BMP file using another extension.
