Custom FRAM71 Bezels
Hello FRAM71 Owners,

For those of you wishing to add a little customization to your FRAM71, I've created a shop on Shapeways where you can order FRAM71 bezels in various colors and materials.

As I become familiar with the modeling tools I should be able to modify the text on the bezel, perhaps change the font or add initials. I can then add the custom bezel to the shop where it can be ordered.

Note: Prices are not marked up. You only pay for materials and shipping.

Dave

How fun! Kind of like adding some chromed parts to your vehicle. :-)

Pimp My Ride! Smile

Edit: Okay, 9 bezels have been sold so far, and the shop's been open for less than a day. Before anyone orders any more, I'd like to remind you that I can add other materials, if for example, you'd like one in a different color. Also, I should soon be able to customize the text, perhaps change the font or add your initials.

And for the buyers, I've had good luck painting the letters gold using an oil-based craft pen.

Also, please post pics here when the bezels arrive.

Just added a bunch of different materials and colors.

There's also some historical posts on the old forum. Just Google FRAM71 site:hpmuseum.org.

Now that we've had some fun with bezels, who would like to model the 71 front-port module housing? I think it would be well worth the cost to not have to painstakingly cut open a module to make an OD Module, and of course it could be made in red. Smile Then we could start color-coding all of our 71B modules, but I digress.

Awesome! Please let us know how they fit.

Take care when replacing the bezel. If you have a 1MB version, be careful of any wires and pink blobs. With the metal bezels, make sure there's adequate electrical clearance. Some small pieces of kapton between the bezel and PCB should do the trick.

So I've learned a little from Shapeways. When you're ready for the platinum one we can hollow it out to bring the price down. Smile

The red one looks pretty nice. Next we need to see them installed and maybe some gold lettering. Smile

Thanks to Hans for making the model available.

After the brief success of this experiment it occurred to me that we could 3D-print the front port module housings. This would make it much easier to make an "OD Module" for use with the SYSRAM feature. We even have a drawing of the housing in the 71 H/W IDS. I understand that this is about an hours worth of work for someone with some experience. Anyone up to the task?

Thanks for posting these pics Sylvain. Which color/material is the stone/silver colored one near the bottom. I like the color and look.

All the pics are captioned. The grey one is Polished Metallic Plastic. Note that the Polished Gold Steel bezel is enrobed in 24k gold. Smile The black one looks pretty rough; I see that that material is not polished.

Hopefully we should see a pic of one in Matte Bronze Steel in the near future.

Indeed they are, as long as your cursor is hovering over the photo, which it wasn't, but doing so fixed it. Thanks.

I'm a bit surprised the surface is so rough - is this typical of 3D printing, or at least of economical 3D printing?

You get what you pay for. The red one is polished and is noticeably smoother than the un-polished black one. For three times the price, the acrylic ones are described as having a smooth surface and this neuron pendant is anything but rough.

You'll get a Platinum one (hand-polished to a beautiful smooth sheen) for only €8,148.23! :-)

The plan is to take €1,000 and persuade Hans to modify the model and hollow it out, reducing the amount of Platinum required. That should drop the cost down to maybe a few thousand euros. Smile

Hi Egan,

I don't have permission to give out the model, it'll have to come from Hans.

But that brings up something else, would you or your daughter be able to create the model for the front port module housing from the drawing?

I'll ask Hans. My daughter has some acrylic printers that can do multicolor. Thinking fully transparent with white letters. E.g. my Father's day present:

I'll ask my daughter. Email me the drawing or post a URL here and I'll ask. Her 3D lab is moving this summer so it could take sometime.

Excellent! The drawing is on p.149 of the 71 H/W IDS. Ask Hans for tips on modeling the housing to fine tune the dimensions.

Nice Alien egg, is it available on Shapeways?

Asked my daughter, will let you know reply when I get it. Are you looking to design your own modules? Or just need blanks?

The plan is to make "OD Modules" for use with FRAM71 and I've acquired a couple of 4k modules for that purpose. 3D-printing housings would be much easier than cutting them open as I have been. I would then offer the OD Modules to FRAM71 owners, to support the community. Smile I think red would be cool, especially with some raised lettering or maybe the clear acrylic like you have.

If you get the bezel made in clear acrylic, please put me down for one. Smile What other letter colors would look good, maybe gold?

Dave
