RE: Poll: Landscape or Portrait?
Depends on the calculator. The 71B would suck in portrait.
Any of the two above? I count three above. |

From The Introduction: The HP-41C represents a totally new concept in the design of Hewlett-Packard calculators. In fact, because of the advanced capabilities of the HP-41C, it can even be called a personal computing system. The HP-41C is the first Hewlett-Packard handheld calculator offering an exciting array of alphanumeric capabilities. Still an handheld calculator though. The core of a system. "...even being called a personal computer..."
I'm only a curious here, but the 41 has Alfa and programmable, highly customizable, lots of peripherals....there's another big differences from the 71 beyond language and format? I really want to know and understand, I'm not being ironic, please. Thanks |

RE: Poll: Landscape or Portrait?
For the record, the 1984 HP Catalog, p.585, refers to "Series 40 Handheld Computers". In the '85 catalog, p.63, the 71B is introduced as a Handheld Computer and the 41's were demoted to Advanced Calculators.
I don't think the 75 and the Portables count 'cause they don't have a dedicated numeric keypad. Dave |

Perhaps this poll should be limited to handheld calculators, but then someone will try to hold a 9810/15 in their hand and hurt themselves. |

RE: Poll: Landscape or Portrait?
Nothing like a poll to stir things up...
I've used both portrait (most) and landscape (Voyagers and 71B) for so long it's hard to think of the same machine in another orientation. E.g. it's hard to think of using a 12C in a portrait layout, or a 15C. As the only relevant data point so far, for those 41 users that are now using a DM41L - how is it? To be fair, it's hard to compare 30+ years of use with a month or two, but it would be interesting to hear feedback. With the DM42L and possibly the WP-35S coming out in landscape, it would be nice to hear feedback from users that have "made the switch", which might positively influence these new landscape designs. --Bob Prosperi |

RE: Poll: Landscape or Portrait?
I have a visceral revulsion towards the landscape style.
I remember ordering my HP71 and was really eager to get it, but actually having it was a significant letdown. Till coming here, I wasn't really sure why I didn't like my 71, it has the 41 translator, extra memory, and the IL module, but I never had that 'damn this is slick' feeling from using it that I did with my HP41CV, and it's follow on HP41CX. (BTW, I'm sure I could have fixed my CV with what I know now about lose screws and intermittent zebra connectors, damn me for getting rid of it!) I've amassed quite a collection of HP machines now, and except for the 71 and the 75 I bought back in the 80s, I have no landscape machines. Now, how would I feel about the Swiss Micros units? Idunno. I suspect as a novelty, it would be like the 71, cool for a week, and then relegated to the display case, or maybe even the bottom desk drawer. The Go41 app is portrait, and I am really enjoying having a CX (and a 67) hidden in my phone and with me at all times. And since I have a $24 cell phone, no anxiety if I drop it in water. (my head would explode if something happened to flagship) Not sure why I hate the landscape format so much, I just do. 2speed HP41CX,int2XMEM+ZEN, HPIL+DEVEL, HPIL+X/IO, I/R, 82143, 82163, 82162 -25,35,45,55,65,67,70,80 |

Diagonal: best of both worlds!
Really, portrait unless it's landscape. 8-D |
