HP 01 on Pawn Stars
Had a friend call me yesterday, whilst watching this popular Pawn Star series he saw a working Stainless Steel HP 01 Watch brought into Gold and Silver Pawn Shop in Vegas to be sold.
The seller only got $100, be interesting to see what mark up is,
but hey, that's show business. :-)

RE: HP 01 on Pawn Stars
Even if the owner low-balled all the other listings on "that auction site", he could still probably still get more than $100 for that watch.

RE: HP 01 on Pawn Stars
I flew down on a special for 255$ return. Paid 200 for the watch. Won 2540$ at the slots machines. Bought a ring for the wife. All in one day.

Geeze, doesn't anyone do the research, especially the geek that owns it. And so many incorrect statements from Cory.

Reminds me of the storage wars HP01 that Daryl found. At least he took it to Guy Ball!

Wait, so you bought the very watch that was on the show?! Awesome! As for slots winnings... meh, I find the watch more exciting -- but I'm a bit biased :-) Congrats on both, tho.

EDIT: Damn it! Forgot to check the date!

Wow Geoff,
Don't you love it when a plan comes together.
I'm going to Vegas in July, can you let me know what slot machine you were using?

What made you suspicious? Was it winning $2540 at the slot machines or Geoff buying a ring for his wife? Smile

RE: HP 01 on Pawn Stars
Wow - I thought the watch would have commanded a higher price too, given the HP-01 is rare.

It's interesting. Most of us wish we could have bought the watch for $100. If offered, how many of us would have said no and offered a higher price? Or would we giggle inside and run away with our new possession we got at a really "good" deal. Pawn Shops are probably not the best place to get the highest price, but the seller should have done a little research on the item before going to the pawn shop.

Not sure what the watch would go for on ebay, but from looking at some past auctions, it might be as high as $1,500, or maybe a little more. If I assume $1,500, then that is a markup of 15 times the original $100 price paid. When viewed this way, I know that I have purchased many items, including HP calculators, that were worth over 15 tines what I had paid for them. For example, $5 for a HP-15C. But I never argued with the seller that I should pay more for it.

Just some random thoughts on my part.

I'm assuming you are referring to the seller.

I wouldn't call him stupid, but I would say he didn't do his research.

I have to admit I have fallen into that trap myself - have sold many items where I didn't do my research. I have also bought many items where I paid way too much - again because I didn't do my research. But I hope no one called me stupid.

RE: HP 01 on Pawn Stars
The guy initially said he was looking at $1000, so I am suspicious he looked on the web to get some idea, even bothering to put batteries in it.
I admit I have also done similar, and the opposite. The first HP 01 watch I bought was 20 years ago and paid $75, I thought that was expensive at the time.
I say good luck to everyone in the selling chain, and happy Geoff ended up with it.

Just took a look there today - I was going to put a deposit down for you, but sadly it's not in the display case :-)

They did have a Curta I, though!

Considering the sale occurred over a year ago, does that surprise you? Hopefully the Pawn Stars got smart and sold it on their eBay store.
