RE: Most common calculators in the forum?
Maybe keep it simple and just track top 3 devices?
Everyone can simply post again and say what is their main device for actual regular usage (not merely ownership). Mine is the 42S now (previously the 15C until I got my physical 42S recently). |

RE: Most common calculators in the forum?
You can add a HP 50g for me now.
Also, although it looks like my 2 HP Primes have been counted correctly, there is no '2x' against my name, so you might find that things don't add up... EDIT: Main devices: the HP Primes, follow by the DM 15L |

Some folks were replying with what they owned, others what they use, and in most cases didn't report emulators at all as that was excluded in the OP. One can't reach any real conclusions about what people own and use, based solely on the above replies, due to the evolving nature of the thread. Which is not to say that this thread has not been interesting (despite my initial doubts...), in fact it has been quite interesting for me. These things surprised me: 1. So many members own/use so many units of a given model 2. So many members own/use RPL machines, despite the relative few that post about it 3. So few members are Prime users (though I think most Prime users don't spend time in this area of the forum, so it's a false indication) 4. So many members have/use business models These things didn't surprise me: 1. So many members prefer the 41 over any other machine 2. There are many, many fanatics here. Calcaholism is never pretty. 3. That I was surprised my many of the replies. I always learn interesting stuff in these seemingly boring topics, which I guess is what I really need to learn. --Bob Prosperi |

Anyway I made the category " 48gII/49g/49g+/50g" only for the snapshot, in the first post the calc are divided. So either your write them divided or I assume a distribution proportional to the snapshot. First post not yet updated, sorry! From rprosperi " So many members own/use RPL machines, despite the relative few that post about it" Instead for my taste there are enough RPL topics (or at least they are engaging enough) already here, without need to go to comp.sys.hp48. For this I thought that the 50g and 48 series would easily be the most common calcs. (although they have the 1st and 2nd spot in terms of owners, according to the previous snapshot) And yes, fanaticism is never pretty. You all should just accept to have a 50g and admire it 30 minutes every day. xD (not even my 50g gets that amount of care) Wikis are great, Contribute :) |

I was surprised to discover that not everyone means the same thing when they say they use some calculator. I thought using a calculator meant using it at work, or to do your taxes, or whatever, but apparently, some people consider writing a program because of some challenge to be using their calculator, while I would call that playing with my calculator. |

Well, with new definitions like this, which seems completely appropriate, the above summaries are even less clear and harder to generalize about. We may have to start this poll all over again with clear new definitions... --Bob Prosperi |

Ah now I get better some of your arguments, especially the one about 'people likely collect calculators without using them'. For me using an object is using it, whatever the "seriousness" of the task (then again solving a challenge may be way more serious than computing taxes, it depends on the perspective). The different types of use can be further refined. For example I use my calculators to explore problems since a calculator is like a ready math "PlayStation" that i don't need to setup. Especially the 50g has an immense library of commands plus some neat thirdy party libraries (and I wonder what will happen with new RPL). Wikis are great, Contribute :) |

To me, the difference between "using for fun" and "using for work" matters, because if something I only use for fun stops working, I can just find another way to have fun, but if something I use for work stops working, I have a crisis, and I need to find a replacement. This is why I'm interested in emulation / simulation. Having a simulator means that I can continue using a calculator even when the actual, original, physical devices are no longer available... Which will happen, sooner or later. |
