Wanted: HP-65 Quick Reference Guide
I am looking for a printed copy of the HP-65 Quick Reference Guide. If anyone has one that they can part with, please reply with a PM stating condition and price. I will get back to any who replies.

Thanks,

John

Did the HP65 really support RCL-arithmetics, as stated in the PDF?
And did it return to step 00 if CL PRGM was pressed in run mode (like e.g. the HP25)?

I don't think so on the CL PRGM.

It does support RCL arithmetic. I expect that Gene is correct on the CL PRGM. I should receive my new (to me) 65 this week. I’ll check it and get back to you.

I tried this on the Panamatic HP65 emulator which is supposed to run the original firmware, and RCL-arithmetics do not work (as opposed to storage arithmetics). The museum's HP65 feature page confirms that only the latter is supported. So...?!?

Just to make sure what we're talking about:

Storage arithmetics:
4 STO 1
5 STO x 1 => 5
RCL 1 => 20

Recall arithmetics:
4 STO 1
5 RCL x 1 => 20
RCL 1 => 4

I think you will enjoy it. ;-)

RE: Wanted: HP-65 Quick Reference Guide
RCL arithmetic is not mentioned in the HP 65 owners manual, although STORAGE register arithmetic is mentioned.

My HP 65 emulator on my iPhone does have RCL arithmetic, but I can't say yet for the real machine.

My HP-65 does not support RCL arithmetic operations. If I press CL PGM in RUN mode and then switch to program mode '44' is shown which is the CL PGM instruction. Stepping only forward Smile and going back to where one would expect to see '44' again, it is not there.

Try CC41!

Same here on the Panamatic emulator. The behaviour you mentioned seems to be the same for other keys than CLEAR PRGM. Press ENTER, switch to PRGM mode and see 41. Which also disappears in the same way as you described.

My emulator doesn't do RCL arithmetic either, but I cannot find any reference to RCL arithmetic, only STO arithmetic in the copy of the manual that I have.

All ROM is used in the HP-65 so maybe there was not enough room to support RCL functions.

The HP-65 puts all key press values into a buffer and when switched to W/PGM mode, this value is used to display the key coordinate of the last key pressed. It did not get stored in program memory because the key press was in RUN mode.

44 is the CLx button ie [f] [CLx] -> Clear PRGM

cheers

Tony

I forgot to mention this process is all explained on pages 62 and 63 of the HP-65 owners manual.

Unsupported functions do not have to get explained in the manual. ;-)

As far as I know, at that time the HP45 was the only calculator to feature recall arithmetic. From that point on the latter was dropped, and it did not reappear until the HP15C – please correct me if I'm wrong here.

Ah, very enlightening. Thank you for this explanation.

When I read this thread yesterday I fired up Tony's HP-65 emulator and was surprised to see the '44' in the display, initially thinking there may be a bug. I would go back to RUN mode, GTO 0 and then SST through, and the 44 was gone. WTF??

So I broke down and looked into the manual, and it took a lot of looking (especially when one is inclined to think it's a bug anyhow) and then I finally found this explanation. Though I (probably) knew this in the distant past, I've completely forgotten this behavior, and as it never appeared again in any future machines, it was easy to forget.

Although we tend to think of the 65 as just a slightly simpler 67, it's easy to forget just how far the programming features and behavior advanced between the 65 and the Woodstocks in just a couple years.

No doubt lots of folks are also having refresher courses reading this too. Thanks, Dieter for those questions about the suspicious QRG contents.
