HP 50g deep-sleep mode - cdmackay - 10-15-2018 10:19 PM

In the 50g User's Guide, in Appendix G (Useful Shortcuts), it mentions On+SPC as a shortcut for “Deep-sleep shutdown - timer off”:

[attachment=6475]

Yet when I try it, nothing at all seems to happen.

Am I confused, or was this perhaps never implemented, or removed in a later firmware?

thanks.

It doesn't work and never has worked. No idea why it's in the User's Guide.

RE: HP 50g deep-sleep mode - grsbanks - 10-16-2018 05:05 AM

Bit like alarms on the 50g. They don't work and never have worked and yet that's in the manual too...

RE: HP 50g deep-sleep mode - cdmackay - 10-16-2018 10:14 AM

OK, thanks very much, both. I thought I was missing something Smile

RE: HP 50g deep-sleep mode - Thomas Okken - 10-16-2018 12:48 PM

Is the alarm issue something that only affects the 50g, or does it affect all the ARM-based RPL calculators?

Can't say for sure because all the documentation I've seen about it is WRT the 50g.

The likelihood is that it's because of the Saturn emulation layer. If this is the case then it will no doubt affect all of the machines in the same family.

The alarm works on the 49g+

RE: HP 50g deep-sleep mode - DavidM - 10-16-2018 04:40 PM

I'm separated from my 49g+ for a while so I'm not able to verify this, but I'm 99% certain that alarms are inconsistent on both my 49g+ and 50g. I'm not sure about the 48gII, but I've been under the impression that the alarm issues were present on all of the ARM-based RPL calculators.

The ON & SPC key combo is documented in the HP 50g User's Guide however, it is not documented in the Advance User's Reference Manual (AUR). Although Deep-Sleep mode is referenced to twice under the WSLOG command.

Looking at the printing history, the AUR was printed in 2009, which is later than the User's Guided printed in 2006.

It WAS true for the HP 48 series, in which it was often referred to as "coma mode". But apparently coma mode went away when the 49G came out, so, as the others have said, it shouldn't be in the 50g manual.

I have a gut feeling that there were some models other than the 48 which also had a coma mode of some sort. Anybody know of any?

We now know (thanks, Cyrille!) that the Prime G2 has a deep sleep mode which uses less power but doesn't stop the clock. It's accessed by pressing and holding down Shift, then pressing and holding down On for about half a second, when the little HP logo blinks (merely pressing Shift+On isn't enough).

At least some Pioneers (17B, 17Bii, 27s, 42s...) had a coma mode by turning them off while pressing the upper right and lower right buttons.
It turns off the clock (but 42s has no clock (?)) and displays "MACHINE RESET" when turned on again.

thanks all for the updates.

I read about the Prime mode, which prompted me to check for a similar mode on my 50g, having read the earlier coma mode anecdote.

Did not know (or remember if I did) that, thanks Massimo. Was this discovered by users (maybe noted in a PPC Journal, etc.) as I'm pretty sure it is not documented in the manuals?

I am pretty sure I got it from a post here, many years ago.
There was a time I had a 42s with batteries in, and I always turned it off this way.

...then I put the batteries out. :)

I just tested this on an HP-42s (my 32K mod). Interestingly, even though it says MACHINE RESET when powered back on, the registers, programs and even the stack are still intact.

MACHINE RESET basically means just that; this is also reported after pressing [ON]+[F3]. When memory is lost, it reports MEMORY LOST. And amazingly, these are both documented in the docs, though the Pioneer deep sleep is not.

RE: HP 50g deep-sleep mode - Thomas Okken - 10-18-2018 02:39 AM

The HP-42S manual has this to say about Machine Reset (appendix B):

Quote:If the calculator doesn't respond to keystrokes or is otherwise behaving unusually, attempt to reset it. Resetting the calculator resets many conditions to their default states (such as turning Program-entry mode off and exiting all menus). Refer to appendix C, "Flags," for a table of flag settings at machine reset.

To reset the calculator, hold down the [EXIT] key while you press the [√x] key. Repeat this if necessary. The calculator displays Machine Reset to confirm that reset has occurred.

Bob, as you said, no mention of deep sleep... but on a calculator without a clock, like the 42S, what would the difference be between deep sleep and regular sleep? Is the standby current lower?

I admit I never measured it (as I had to do just 2 days ago on my DM42...).

I too have never measured this (I just found out about it too) but I presume the 42S does support this since it is built on the (nearly) identical SysRPL/OS/HW platform that the other machines are built on, so the OS and hw support it. Though I imagine the effect (sleep vs. deep sleep) on 42S is the same, I'd guess that it would have taken more effort to make it not work than to have the mode supported.
