This link Technical Notes # 17, May 1986 describes the program HP-41CV "WOOD" for ZIG ZAG Transect Data, SCS-OR-ENG-85-5. The program listing & documentation might be of interest to arborists, loggers, foresters, etc.. Otherwise …

Maybe a program for planting trees to avoiding this:

The program give you a direction and the perpendicular distance as an offset. You give the forest density and the program with a GPS calculates where you can place a tree to plant a "randomized" forest, but keeps a minimal distance between the trees for vehicles of foresters.

Another brillant app idea from me and somebody will be a millionaire on Google Play... DAMN...

After reading The Hidden Life of Trees by Peter Wohlleben, there is so much ecologically wrong with that kind of production forest, that randomizing the positions of the trees wouldn't fix anything -- except making it a bit more esthetically pleasing for hikers and more of a pain for the foresters...

Today we would probably use a simple Excel spreadsheet for this kind of calculations.

Good snag, also try zigzag_instructions_2001.pdf as well as Zigzag Transect Instructions.doc, both are easy, non-advocate, generic downloads.
