... the spirit of a libreCalc (freeCalc) is not dead. The project is reborn today from its ashes like the phoenix with SymboLibre, the free graph calculator project of the ENS (Ecole Nationale Supérieure/National School Superior) from Lyon!

The team includes no less than 22 people who are first-year students Master's degree in Computer Science, including several notable personalities from the community like Sébastien "Lephénixnoir" Michelland, director of Casio Planet http://www.planet-casio.com, as well as a former member of Omnimaga http://www.omnimaga.org/. Will you guess who is this? Wink

The calculator project SymboLibre aims to be fully transparent, combining the spirit of free and do it yourself . The plans of the material will be published with the details of the components, as well as of course the source code. What you can freely improve and/or repair it so that it lasts a very long time! Smile As indicated by his name, Symbolibre will be a free calculator, and thus poses as a worthy successor to the LibreCalc ..

Note that Symbolibre is not only the fruit of a mere vision of former high school students, but has also benefited from the lights of professors of the IFÉ (French Institute of Education) as well Bernard Parisse, Giac/Xcas author and teacher researcher at the University of Grenoble (Fourier Institute) .

... maybe NewRPL joins the project.

This is really a great project, now we have a chance to get a calc with non-crippled hardware AND using free software.
Until now my participation was very small (https://xcas.univ-grenoble-alpes.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2249), I discovered Symbolibre in the tiplanet news last Monday. But I'd really like to participate much more!

first year report

Quote:Part 8
Conclusion

Over the course of the year, we achieved the main goal of the project and managed to build a working graphing calculator, despite having to regularly review our schedules and objectives on the software aspects.
The academic year has now ended, but the Symbolibre project has not. Many of us would like to take the project further into development.

Our first prerequisite is to make the source code available to everyone online, under a GPLv3 license. There are no major barriers to that, it is mostly a question a sorting out everyone’s agreement and license headers.
Another short-term goal is to review and harmonize the code written by different people. The high concentration of contributions the last few weeks made it too hard to review code as it was written.

As for our long-term plans, we are discussing the possibility of testing some of our prototypes with high school students, an opportunity made possible by our partnership with the Institut Fran¸cais de l’Education. Other people have expressed interest in the project at the public´ demonstration and on community forums, and we are looking forward to opportunities to work with them

Hi,

I've just released a french review of the Symbolibre :
https://tiplanet.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=243133#p243133

All used pictures can be found over there :
https://tiplanet.org/forum/gallery/album.php?album_id=581

Let's boot it :

5 apps for now :
[Image: image.php?mode=thumbnail&album_id=58...e_id=10940]

The 1st calc app is already very complete, with giac and natural input+output :
[Image: image.php?mode=thumbnail&album_id=58...e_id=10944][Image: image.php?mode=thumbnail&album_id=58...e_id=10943]

4 programming langages are supported for now, among them Python and OCaml :
[Image: image.php?mode=thumbnail&album_id=58...e_id=10948]

It's built around the Raspberry Pi Zero :
[Image: image.php?mode=thumbnail&album_id=58...e_id=11004]

Now about program performances, with floats it ranks 1st, a little faster than the HP Prime G2.
With integers it's more complicated... for both of them anyway.

You can also connect a keyboard or a screen, although you'll have to dismantle it first :
