Greetings from Germany - Thott - 07-25-2019 12:02 PM

Greetings from Germany, Hessen, Frankfurt.

This forum is amazing!

I just join this forum beside Facebook HP41.
Before joining I study all the tips, tricks and Information given here.
This forum is a heaven if you searching for HP handheld computers help.

Since my studies I am a HP fan and all my stuff still working perfect. Because I guard it jealousy it still looks like out of the box.
And all are used today.

I renew at the card reader the transportation roll and the worm gear motor coupling and did some works at the thermal printer.
This keeps them alive :-) and they are functional like on the first day.

Happy to be here and thanks all for updating my knowledge.....

Some picture of my stuff is attached

Hi Thomas,

Welcome to the forum! Your calculators look to be in excellent condition as is your radio station.

After spending time here you may find your calculator collection growing...

Craig

Hello Thomas,

Welcome to the forum.
Very nice HP-41 set ... and impressive radio amateur setup!
I see that you have half-nut 41, if you think to add more modules to your setup I would suggest that you look at Diego's Clonix-D or NoV-64 modules.

Sylvain

Indeed, I have a NoV-64 myself. You can pack it full of other ROMs (well, their images, but same thing) and it winds up being a much better deal in the end. It also enables the use of modern "ROMs" that never really existed in hardware form.

Thank you all for your warm welcome!

I like very much all the vintage HP handheld computers, their amazing design and the technology at this previous time.

But I will stay at the HP41CX and the HP48GX and their accessories.

What I am still looking for is a rechargeable battery pack for the HP41 for renewing with new batteries.

Furthermore I am looking for a kit for the motor coupling to the worm gear of the HP41 card Reader.

I renew it together with the drive rolls but it need hours searching and trials for the right cable insulation that fits together and to the motor shaft and the gear.

I made it, but what a hell of work.

Finger crossing that it works long time. Actually it works very stable......
But you know the card reader behaves like a Diva :–)

A IR modul for the HP41 is nearly ordered. To use the 82240A Printer together with the HP41.

Thanks for the tip.

If you can lay your hands on a fullnut 41C/CV/CX then you might be interested in replacing its CPU board with a 41CL board from Systemyde International:

I would suggest to use NiMh N batteries instead of a battery pack, you will have more autonomy.
For ~$12.00 USD you can have 4 x N batteries rated at 600 mAh (look here).
I use a smart charger like this one to recharge these batteries.

You are right!
But it would be nice to have the original rechargeable batteries pack with the
housing :–)

But in the meantime I will use the N rechargeable batteries. Normal N batteries are in the long time run too expensive.

I'll add my welcome too, Thomas, glad you decided to join. You'll find lots of similar stories here about caring for and preserving our original HP tools/toys, and clearly lots of technical and usage notes too.

I see from your photos your 41 has the HP touch pad - do you like the feel of the 41 with the touch pad installed?

Like many folks here, I got one back in the 80's but found it totally changes the feel of the keyboard (of course) and that I did not like it all, so I almost immediately removed it and it's been kept since then in it's original poly bag, ready to be deployed if I think I will have to use my 41 with dirty fingers. Safe so far...

Impressive ham station! Is that a Heathkit SB100/101? That was my rig for quite a while.

Hello Thomas,

a warm welcome also from me from Schwaben-Laendle. It's always good to hear from other HP fans here in Germany, too.

The HP-41C was my second machine after an HP-97. Both are still in use like a lot of other HPs. I use pieces of silicone gasoline hose from aircraft model making to repair the transportation roll of the magnetic card reader.

Your lab looks fantastic. You really have a chance to win the price in the elektor Summer Contest 2019, which started today.

Best regards

Karl

Hello,
Thank you for the welcome!
The feeling of the overlay is terrible. I would say there is no „feeling“.
Frankly speaking I only try it one time......that was it :-)

I bought it for 2 € at a flea market out of a junk goods box.
Excellent condition with absolutely no usage signs.

I also think that with a long term usage the hard white plastic melting
spots will damage the keys.
It’s now only a collecting part....

Hello Karl,
thank you for your message, dear neighbor!

And thanks for the tips of the silicone gasoline hose. I will try to get it from
Conrad in FFM. They have a huge model department.
The most difficult repair was the motor coupling. Due to my hobby I have
a lot of cable sizes. But to find the right one which fits together, to the tinny motor shaft and to the aluminium sleeve was hard :-)

Up to now the reader works without a failure.
But it’s good to have it in spare :-)

I will check the web page of “elektromagazin”......

Enjoy the day with the lovely 40 deg. C. temperatures :-)

Greetings
Thomas

Hello,

I was licensed 1980. That means 20 years after your licensing.....
This was not my first transcv. I bought it used in a very good
condition.
It’s very sad, that Heathkit didn’t exist anymore.
They sold quite good self made Electronic kits.

The German head office was close to my home with their show and selling
room.

I wish you gd dx, 73 and hpe cu on the bands!

Hello Thomas,

thanks a lot fr your reply. I never had the problem with the motor coupling but, while thinking about the problem, I wondered if heat shrink tubing (Schrumpfschlauch in Deutsch) would do the trick?

Conrad is the right address for silicon gasoline hose. I bought mine there, too. I took 4,5 mm outer diameter and ca. 2mm inner diameter. To get the size of the original tranportation roll, I put one piece of gasoline hose on the axis and a second piece of gasoline hose over the first pice. It's a bit tricky but it works perfectly.

Best reagards

Karl
