SmileBASIC Reference Manual? - toml_12953 - 10-17-2019 01:28 AM

I have the 52 page manual for SmileBASIC, a BASIC interpreter for the Nintendo 3DS but it doesn't explain all the commands and functions of SmileBASIC. Is there a comprehensive reference manual available somewhere?

There is also a 40-page InstructionList.pdf: http://smilebasic.com/en/reference/

I had been hoping to use this on a Nintendo 2DS, which apparently used to be possible (https://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-12144-page-2.html).
But this page http://smilebasic.com/en/buynow/ implies that Smilebasic is not available on the Nintendo 2DS or Nintendo Switch. The 2DS is meant to run most programs that a 3DS can, but will they sell it?

It says for 3DS family systems, which I believe includes the 2DS?

Thanks! That's just what I was looking for. I don't have any Nintendo system now but SmileBASIC looks like it's good enough to get me to buy one.

The 2DS runs everything the 3DS can. The one thing to watch out for is if a game says "New Nintendo 3DS Only", which means you need a New 3DS(XL) or a New 2DSXL to play it, due to requiring the more powerful hardware in the "New" model. There is only a very small number of such high profile releases, though, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and Fire Emblem Warriors being among the most noteworthy. So if SmileBASIC doesn't say it needs a "New" 3DS, then a 2DS (the original non-folding one) will run it just fine too. Just access the eshop and download it.

Any news since then? I am planning to buy a DS console, if 2DS enough for SmileBASIC I don't want to pay more than enough. Is there something info which model(s) can run SB (because more models available)?
And what about earlier DS models? Maybe other programming languages on these machines available?
I am not really familiar with consoles, I have two Nintendo Game Boy Advance SP with few cartridges and nothing more.

Thanks,
Csaba

There is no more news from me...
I actually got a 3DS for about the same price as a 2DS (both secondhand), so I can't confirm it. But the information from other posters here suggests a 2DS should be OK.

I would recommend you buy either new 3DS XL or new 2DS XL
Because these models have the fastest processor and largest screen. Both work with Smilebasic. 2DS model doesn't do 3D.
Confused about all the model names?

Thanks, is this mean the 2DS also able to run SmileBASIC? The difference only the 3D capability between 3DS and 2DS and no needed the "NEW" version? (Because the processor type is different in the "NEW" as I can see in the Wikipedia table: Nintendo 3DS Comparison)

There's a new version of SmileBasic for the Nintendo Switch. The version 4.2.0 manual is at

https://sup4.smilebasic.com/doku.php?id=reference:top (in Japanese)

Version 4.2.0 is a port to the Nintendo Switch which supports a keyboard for those not interested in dinking around on a small screen with a stylus. Differences between 4.2.0 and the 3DS/2DS version 3.36 can be found here at

http://smilebasicsource.com/page?pid=1362 (SmileBASIC 4 for SmileBASIC 3 geezers)

Compatibility between the two versions and platforms is not so good. SB4 programs can't be loaded on a SB3 platform and SB3 programs can be downloaded from the SB cloud, but only for editing and porting purposes.

Although portable, the size of the Switch and its limited battery life doesn't seem as suited to portable computing as the clamshell DS models.

2DS, 3DS, 2DS XL, 3DS XL, New 2DS XL, New 3DS XL
All run Smilebasic.
The compare info here shows the 2DS and 2DS XL run 3DS software https://www.nintendo.com/3ds/features/compare
