HP 41 eproms? - Ken S - 03-28-2020 12:14 AM

Hi all,

I recently picked up a lot of what are described as HP41 eproms. I picked them up cheaply enough that if I can't do anything with them it is not a big deal. It looks like like the eproms came with seperate upper and lower banks and the lot appears to have images of the following roms:

FORTH41
MC EPROM
NFC ROM
ASSEMBL
ASS3
ASS3 BURN
BLDROM
DACROM
DAVID ASSEMBLER

So do images of all of these already exist? If not is there any way to extract images of these?

You got the lot pretty cheap, even for empty EPROMs, Wink

Several of these are long available (FORTH41, David Assembler) but it's hard to say about many of the items as the names shown are not exact matches for usual ROM names, though the contents may be.

Do you want to extract the images directly from the chips using normal PC-based tools, or do you want to extract them on a 41, in which case you will need one of the vintage EPROM carrier devices that plug in to a 41 port, and one of the advanced 41 modules like the HEPAX, ZenROM, etc.

Whatever is simplest to create Rom images which could be used with a 41CL or with a hepax module or its equivalent.

I've got an EEPROM module for the 41 (ZEPROM) which is blank and I've no programmer. Anyone want to make an offer for it? Obviously I've no way to test that it still programs. The 1, 2, 3 & 4 annunciators light up on boot with it in a calculator. Otherwise, I've very little idea about it.

The EPROM lot you got are programmed in U2L8 format that was used by most MLDL/EPROM boxes between 1980 & 1985.

Here is a slide which is part of my HHC2020 presentation (if there is one) that show the format.

Thanks Sylvain,

I will keep an eye out for one of those. In the mean time if anyone who has one of those boxes has an interest in extracting any of the roms let me know. I would be happy to ship them.

Ken

Hello Ken,

I have found these on TOS and in 41CL ROM update file:
  • BLDROM : Builder ROM from W.D.Wilder
  • DAVID ASSEMBLER : ES84081B David Assembler for MLDL boxes from Eramco Systems
  • FORTH41 : FORTH for HP-41 from Serge Vaudenay
  • MC EPROM : for use with MC00506A HP-IL EPROM Programmer from Mountain Computer
  • NFC ROM : for use with ProtoCODER, ProtoEPROM, etc boxes from ProtoTECH

Still searching for these:
  • ASSEMBL : another assembler ?
  • ASS3 : probably Assembler 3
  • ASS3 BURN : a variant or extension of Assembler 3 ?
  • DACROM : Data Acquisition & Control ROM ?

I have several EPROM boxes compatible with these EPROMs, I could easily extract the ROMs and see if you have acquire a lost ROM.
If you have somebody in USA who can do it it is easier for you, otherwise I can do it, I live north of Montreal, Quebec, Canada.

Sylvain

If you think it is worth your time to extract them I would be happy to send them to you. I will pm you.

I suppose it will be easier to determine the EPROMS if you publish the CAT2 entries.
On my website you can determine the contents afterwards:

PS: We are all eagerly awaiting your answer.

Since he does not have a U2L8 style EPROM box, unfortunately that option is off the table for now.

Did you see this:

No I did not, the auction effectively contains an HHP-PE unit that is compatible with U2L8 format.
I cannot bet on it because it is a USA only auction, but you or Ken could.

Some pictures of my HHP-PE (Hand Held Products Portable EPROM) unit.

Seller will not split the listing, been there, tried that...

If it doesn't go ridiculously high I will take a shot at it.

I saw the auction ended, did you win it ?

RE: HP 41 eproms? - Massimo Gnerucci - 04-04-2020 03:23 PM

Glad it ended @ only $290.50.
Maybe next time they will reconsider their 'USA only' exclusivity.
