HP-41 Book "Programming the HP 41C/CV/CX" by Thomas Adams - rprosperi - 08-30-2020 01:02 AM

The subject book appears in many versions of the EduCalc catalog, relatively late in the life of the 41, and seems to be step-by-step format, yet intermediate level.

Does anyone have a copy of this book (preferably in PDF) they can share with the community? If only hard copy is available, would you be willing to either scan it, or loan it to be scanned, to benefit all here?

Feel free to reply by post, PM or email.

Thanks,

https://www.abebooks.com/

Abe Books has a lot of obscure titles. They don't have this one now but you can create a "want list" and they will notify you if a book on your list becomes available.

Yes, Abe Books is indeed my friend; a very close and frequent friend. I always look there first. Smile I've also looked in a few similar places but no luck.

I've never actually seen/touched a copy of this book, even back in the day; I presume that it arrived so (relatively) late in the market life of the 41 that most users had moved on to new machines, and thus few copies were purchased. But hopefully someone here has a copy to share...

Thanks!

Some of those old calculator books are extremely difficult to track down.

Thomas Adams wrote a number of books but I was not able to find a publisher for this particular volume. The Library of Congress database (catalog.loc.org) does not list it so it was probably a private publication.

I also looked at via https://www.find-more-books.com (recommended e.g. for price comparisons) being is a meta search engine, comprising abebooks, eBay, amazon and many other online antiquarians. No success.

There is always a chance that somebody else has scanned it and uploaded it to archive.org. But again, no success in this case.

Only recently the book by Nivergelt in Fractals turned up here. And that book was virtually non-existent for over 10 years. So Bob's approach putting as search warrant here is the best choice.

I understand the frustration, it took me 10 years to find "VLF radio engineering by Watts".
Over the years I have been very good at locating rare radio books, my usual sources don't know anything about this particular HP41 one but I will keep my eyes open.
(Try university libraries, also in other countries, they keep these old and obscure books.)

Looking around I found that:

http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/abouthp/histnfacts/publications/measure/pdf/1987_09-10.pdf#page=21

On page 21 in the right lower corner you can find some (little) more information on and even a picture of the author. Maybe library at Michigan State University can be a source of it? Just a guess.

Just asked google for him. He sadly passed away in 2011 in the age of 80.

Its not in the library index of Michigan university.
I tried searchplus http://msulibraries.summon.serialssolutions.com/#!/search?ho=t&l=en&q=HP-41 and also the normal search function.
It finds many HP-41 books but not this one.

I guess he sold the book to the students directly because he gave classes based on the HP-41 and didn't want anyone to make free copies from the library.
I had a power electronics teacher that did the same, his book is impossible to find now because he didn't allow anybody to copy it or put it in the schools library. (I would do the same btw)

Thanks for your continued searching Erik, it's appreciated.

Perhaps a small possibility? My thoughts ...

At page https://natsci.msu.edu/natsci-profiles/peggy-adams-beloved-professor-leaves-a-legacy-of-learning/ is a contact mail address. Writing there to get contact to Tom Adams widow Peggy to ask her there is a chance to get that book?

Any interesting side note:

My buddy alerted me to a sale at Michigan State University. Among the surplus items were a bunch of 48G calculators. We bought 4 and he sent me 2 in the post.

One of them was a pristine, apparently unused model but alas without the double shot keys. The other one was a dirty, banged up wreck of a calculator with a tweaked bezel. It was obviously opened, probably more than once. I cleaned it up over a few hours and worked out the major bumps in the bezel but it still creaks like a past century wooden rocking chair.

The interesting thing was (now) that it had a sticker on the back, Property of Thomas Adams and I think it also said Physical Therapy Department but I can't remember. The sticker and residue were removed as part of my cleanup operation.

I knew at the time he was the author of at least one HP Book. But I didn't think leaving the calculator as I got it would mean I had a collector's item Big Grin

I believe I may have PDFs of one or more of his books but I have not been home in almost a year, stuck far away due to Corona. When I get back I will look and update the thread.

Thanks for that info hp67, it's a small HP world after all, isn't it, with all due credit to Disney?

I appreciate your checking, when you can, though surely not at the top of the list of things to do once you can return home.

I home you can get home soon, just to be home. Good Luck!

You are right, it absolutely is. I keep running into people who knew people I knew decades ago. I guess it is a consequence of getting old, kinda like groundhog day. When you live long enough it starts to feel like you've seen it all!

Thanks for your wishes. Good health to all our fellow HP enthusiasts!

That pdf only has through page 1. Is the entire book available?

The eBay item says in the description that the book was scanned for the use of the Museum. I wonder if it actually made it to the archives?
