Challenge: Generate a 64 in the display (RPN) - Gene - 09-02-2020 08:56 PM

Your challenge is to take a classic RPN machine in an unknown stack circumstance and generate a 64 in the X register.

You may not use any of the digit keys 0 - 9, the EEX key or the decimal point.

Who can come up with the shortest set of steps ?

9 steps on an 11C - the most obvious method so I expect to be beaten!

RE: Challenge: Generate a 64 in the display (RPN) - Gerson W. Barbosa - 09-02-2020 10:11 PM

5 steps, HP-41C.

According to https://hpmuseum.org/ none of the entries so far are from "The Classics".

On an HP 41-cx I can do this in 4 program steps.

.
7 steps in the HP-25, no modes or contents assumed.

Yes, the “Classics” encompass only the HP-35, HP-80, HP-45, HP-65, HP-70 and HP-55. Perhaps I can use part of my sequence on the HP-65, but then again I assume Gene’s solution should work on all Classics.

Are you implying that the HP-25 isn't a classic !!?? C'mon, Gerson !

I consider even the more recent HP-15C, my first one, a Classic. The above is the curator’s definition.

Best regards,

Gerson.

Yes, but we aren't dealing here with "the curator's definition". Notice that Gene's OP literally says (my underline):

"Your challenge is to take a classic RPN machine [...]"

with no quotes around "classic", no capitalization "Classic", no underline of course, and no reference to the curator's "The Classics (1972)".

Best regards.

By "classics" I merely meant to exclude the WP-34S, the 71B, the RPL machines etc.

In the HP42s and some models of the 41 it can be done in 2 steps.

42S: 2 steps
Werner

RE: Challenge: Generate a 64 in the display (RPN) - Werner - 09-03-2020 06:10 AM

Gene: 'generate a 64 in the X-register'
.. that is not quite the same as saying 'generate the number 64 in the X-reg', is it?
in that case:
41C: 3 steps
Werner

RE: Challenge: Generate a 64 in the display (RPN) - Gerson W. Barbosa - 09-03-2020 08:39 AM

Yes, 2 steps and 4 bytes on the HP-42S. Only because now I know it is possible.

RE: Challenge: Generate a 64 in the display (RPN) - Thomas Okken - 09-03-2020 09:10 AM

How about the smallest number of keystrokes?

I thought that was what Gene meant, actually, and the minimum number of program steps does seem to be a bit too easy. On the 42S anyway. Smile
