HP-34C screen - joved - 10-04-2020 01:23 PM

Hi,

My fantastic HP-34C has some led segments that turn broken. I would like to change the entire "screen". Mine is not soldered.
Where can I find a screen for replacement ?
Are those of HP-33C or 32E compatible ?

Thanks a lot.
Joe.

Yes, all HP-3x calculators of the SPICE series 31-38 have the same 10-digit LED display. You should prefer a solderless donor calculator, otherwise you have to unsolder the display, which needs some patience.

I'm not sure how you can tell but are you sure it isn't a loose contact?

As mentioned, if your 34C is not a soldered unit, bad contact is very likely the cause of the display malfunction. If entire digits are missing or the same segment(s) are missing on all positions, it is likely bad connection with the display to logic board due to a loss in pressure in the display to logic board contacts.

If this is the case, soldering the display is the best solution. When this is done, you must sand down the plastic “pressure plate” in the display contact area so that it fits flat against the logic board. It is a simple, permanent fix.

You're right. I have to check the connectivity !! I have also old 32E, 33E and 33C that I can use to repair my 34C. The problem is that they are soldered version (if I remember correctly).

I will try that this weekend.
