Maybe with the super cautious approach to missions, they decided that open battery contacts presented too much of a possibility of shorts with something and didn't want to add the risk.
The same modification was done on the HP-41C units that were on-board the Space Shuttle according to this source:

Second, NASA had HP weld shut the AC adapter hatch and the the expansion ports, to keep any static electricity from leaking in or out of the machine.
