Panic over - I misunderstood the code. Looking more closely I see that where the code says //use last fl and fr before the sign change it is actually using the values of fl and fr associated with the value of r after the sign change, reading down the table. So that's all correct now.
If none of this makes any sense to anyone, don't worry!
The algorithm to find the split point is really neat - it is surprisingly effective for something with so few function evaluations. I've enjoyed working through it.
