Exceptional solid 21 carat gold HP16C - Neve - 09-09-2021 06:43 PM

I found this thing on eBay while browsing.
This is apparently a solid 21 carat gold HP16C with 3 carat keys that are painted black, probably to maintain original looks and readability.

I must say, I sent a message to the guy, wondering if that was a mistake in the listing. From his answer, he’s definitely not a « HALF-NUT JOB »!!

I don't know French, but maybe the calculator has interesting provenance.
Such as owned by Louis XIV, and then Napoleon II, eventually acquired by Maurice Chevalier who gifted it to Charles De Gaulle, and was bought at a tag sale by Gerard Depardieu?

From "The Devil's DP Dictionary" ca 1981

From the "template" entry
"The most expensive template ever constructed belongs to Xerxes P. Qume, Jr, an amateur AI buff from Ottumwa, IA. His symbol shapes were cut to ANSI X3.5 specification by laser beam into a 4x8 inch plate of pure ruby at a reputed cost of $2.5 million. Mr Qume runs a Radio Shack TRS-80 and has resolutely turned down many trade-in offers from Amdahl and Cray."

I would have offered him 19,946.05 since the shipping was only 53.95 to make it an even 20 grand. But I guess he wouldn't budge.

The athentic collector's item comes with a Texas Instruments case (as pictured) plus the free batteries, I mean come on, the price is more (much more!) than fair Big Grin

So I have to pay a lot to a former working colleague.

At I began working end of 80'ies I had colleague with a HP16C found in a drawer in company. He know that I'm fan of HP calculators, and he promized me, when he retire, he give it to me for free. He told me he don't need the calculator any more when he's retired. Some years ago he retired, and I got the calculator on his last working day from him. The calculator is in used condition, but still working.

Great story Christoph! Smile

Now that is a valuable calculator, never ever let it go! We all wonder how the original owner could have been so careless to leave it in that drawer... but the reverence and care of the next two owners surely makes up for that, so the 16C's honor has been restored.

ah. You need a gold plated HP16-C?
Its easy if you are in Stuttgart:
- come around
- give me 3 beer cases (becks)
- you get the magnificient superb HP16-C (my speculation: it was probably in the hand of Mr. Cahuzac for calculating the status of his switzerland account before he was arrested)
You see. A good story afterward for your neighbours.
