Modern case for HP 71b - polbit - 09-12-2021 11:39 PM

Just wondering if anyone has found that perfect fit modern replacement for the HP 71b case. I'm currently using a TI-Nspire hard case, but it's quite big, and haven't really found THE one. Would love something I can throw into my backpack without worrying about the 71...

I can't take credit for anything other than ordering one of these cases when someone posted info about it earlier this year. Very good fit, very good protection, but it's a hard case so possibly larger than you'd prefer. I like it.

Got the case, and while quite large, it will definitely serve its purpose when it comes to ruggedness, especially with few modifications. Thanks!

You're welcome. Please post pics and description of the mods you implement once ready, they may be something useful to copy.

There is a new HP-71B case made by Aleksandar in Serbia. → HERE.
The case is a mini replica of the HP-75C/D case, very nice, I just ordered two, you need to contact him through Etsy, he build them upon request.

Very nice indeed, thank you Sylvain. I didn’t see any price, would you like to share your knowledge about it?

You're welcome, but to be honest, you should thank Robert.
Robert showed me the "HP-71B PascalD" case, I came up with the idea to create a mini HP-75C case, then Robert talked with Aleksandar to make it happen and the "HP-71B Robert" case was created!

Since his price include shipping, it would be best to ask Aleksandar directly.

I bought the initial one today, the total cost was €54.06 including shipping to USA (NY).

This was really a team effort, I can't take much credit...

Pascal pointed Aleks' original 71B case (different design) out to me, I shared and discussed it with Sylvain and a few other guys, Sylvain suggested a 75-style case might be nice, which seemed brilliant, I suggested it to Aleks, and then went back and forth, sending him some photos and videos of the 75 style case, answering questions, etc. and 2 weeks later, this beautiful case emerged.

I plan to post about it after I receive the case (2-4 weeks, but these days, it's hard to say how long it will really be) so I can share first-hand feedback on the finish, details, feel, etc. But I am confidant it will be as nice as it looks.

It's a great time to be a 71B fan! Big Grin

That is a very nice case! Looks like I'm going to have few different ones soon Smile

Just ordered two in brown.

The 71b resides in the lab along side the 41CL these days.

Even thought the 41CL is a beast, the 71B is so much more powerful as an HP-IL controller that it dwarf everything else.

Here it is in the pelican case.

I think brown and black is a good idea Sylvain, I ONLY have one fram but the other is loaded with three 32k rams.

Working on a new suite of programs for HPIL and the lab work. You are correct Sylvain, it is an HPIL beast!

Will update my order.

Cheers to all!

Geoff

Had a bit of a scare. This had been sitting in its case with batteries in place (dumb). They had depleted but fortunately not leaked. However they were so dead that when I inserted new batteries the FRAM module did not like an immediate power on and the 71b got stuck in a “memory lost’ loop. Clearing the expected message resulted in the cursor followed by another “memory lost” message. Cleared it and the message reoccurred. Pulled the FRAM and calc okay. Replaced the FRAM, turned on, got the “memory lost” as expected but left it this time without clearing the message. It sat for ~ five minutes. Cleared the message and back to normal! Restored the memory and key assignments from the FRAM. ALL GOOD NOW,

I have no HP75 by hand; so, I stay with the design HP71B and HP41 box, based on a bicycle tool leather box I have at home (from my grandparent anno 1900 or older).

Thanks for posting the picture.
My view of a box (I forgot to share with others) is: it should be enough space for adding a "Quick Manual" or in german "Kurzanleitung". Like youre.
So, 2 types of box are most likely necessary:
- rugged tight box for hardcore use (boat etc.); however enough room for short manual AND HP71 in plastic bag water proof
- dust untight leather box for normal use and transport during travel

Nice thing there.

If anybody has experience with it and the closure/opening system, please post your experience here. I will perhaps order later.

Several forum members have bought the case, I have ordered two units which are currently in transit for my home. (Serbia → Canada)
I will report here when I have them.

I just received my two cases, one black and one brown.
They are very well made, same quality as the HP-75 hard case.

Hmm, so the metal rivets are exposed inside the case? Is that how the original 75 case is?

Yes, but on the original 75 case the rivets are flush.
