Absolutely.

And even then, the market will become flooded with all the EX's that were sold directly into education only to spend those intervening decades in dusty basements. Smile

One neat thing about bringing up the engineering display mode to check out a result is that the left/right rocker buttons let one step through whatever one’s preference is, be it 10^3, 10^6, 10^-9, any multiple of 10^3.

RE: CASIO fx-991CW - lrdheat - 06-03-2023 03:34 PM

One can permanently be in engineering mode by going into settings. Numbers are input as in normal mode, but displayed in engineering fashion.

That's the big negative change in this calculator, there are no toggle keys anymore. You have to go to settings and change the modes all the time. Extremely time consuming and not user friendly.

Yeah, extremely cumbersome if those are keys you use heavily. If it's just a once-in-a-while thing (like for me), it's livable at least.

RE: CASIO fx-991CW - Dands - 06-05-2023 01:59 PM

Another thing I noticed, it's a bug that already existed on the 991EX:

In complex mode, after executing an operation, it is not possible to go back using the arrow keys to navigate and edit the operation. You have to re-enter everything again.

Can anyone replicate?

RE: CASIO fx-991CW - lrdheat - 06-05-2023 10:45 PM

After completing an operation, I can apply the up arrow once, and get to original entry, and can use the left or right arrows to put the cursor where I wish to edit…

Seems to be only possible to edit after the second entry. Can't do it if I only have entered a single calculation in the stack.

Bug Casio 991CW ? - Quadratica - 09-04-2023 12:16 AM

Wrong answer on 991CW but 991EX gets it right.

In mathI/MathO mode

2-1
EXE....ouput =1
/2
EXE......output =1/2
SHIFT EXE.....convert to approx gives 0.25 but it should be 0.5

This happens with other numbers too and a reset makes no difference.
However, entering 1/2, EXE and then SHIFT EXE does give 0.5.

Looks to me that, for example in this case, if you’ll notice, Shift EXE grabs the last calculation and puts it in Ans and that is what’s used to process the Shift EXE operation. I think the way the Ans operation processes is where the glitch is.

I think replacing SHIFT EXE with EXE would have output 1/4 (i.e. Ans/2).

So they changed SHIFT EXE to evaluate the expression like EXE does, rather than merely display the current result in a different format.

I think you now need to use the FORMAT menu to display the current result in a different format. This is one of those areas where doing anything on the CW involves far more keystrokes than on the EX!

RE: CASIO fx-991CW - Quadratica - 09-05-2023 11:42 PM

So to get a decimal value one must avoid SHIFT EXE, which is odd. I am a mathematics teacher and I have informed my students about this and advised them to avoid buying the 991 CW altogether, instead buy the 991EX.

CASIO should address this problem.

RE: CASIO fx-991CW - Matt Agajanian - 09-06-2023 02:49 AM

Just my 2c. Maybe the target audience of the CW is students (high school and maybe some level of college [although I can’t see what level of college students would benefit from the CW]). That might explain why the scientists, engineers, and others and us here at MoHPC would find the CW severely lacking.

BUT, if Casio is calling this CW the flagship, I seriously wonder what direction Casio is going in.

Agreed

Only when the last expression evaluated by EXE contains Ans.

Quote:CASIO should address this problem.

I'm sure they changed it by design. On the CW, SHIFT EXE and EXE both produce the same answer. In your case of evaluating an expression containing 'Ans', EXE SHIFT EXE produces the same answer as EXE EXE.

A very short video to illustrate the point about easily making the mistake identified above.

This glitch begs the question: "Why use the ‘approximately equal to’ function in the first place?

But yes. It’s frustrating when the operation doesn’t cooperate the way it’s supposed to.

I'm sorry, but I really don't think this is a glitch; it's clearly operating the way it's intended to. In fact, it operates exactly the same way on my 991EX! The difference was that the EX had the S to D button to give an approximate/decimal answer, which the CW replaced with the format menu.

EXE and approximately equals operate identically: they perform the currently entered calculation, with the difference being the answer format. It's consistent design, which is usually a good thing.

Personally, I think the format button should have been the S/D button, with the format button's functionality being behind a shifted press.

RE: CASIO fx-991CW - wb.c - 10-10-2023 05:01 PM

Definitely not a glitch, just a bad design. ANS is basically a variable, and when you do shift+EXE you are reevaluating the input, but ANS takes on the value of 1/2 from the previous result, which is why you get 1/4 the second time. Do it again and you will get 1/8. Getting rid of the dedicated S-D button was a terrible decision. Just another reason to go with a TI-30X Pro MP instead haha Wink

RE: CASIO fx-991CW - Matt Agajanian - 10-11-2023 07:26 PM

I’ve got a theory.

Although quite bizarre and awkward, the EX is phased out because the CW is geared for middle school. Casio is marketing the graphic models for high school since the graphic models are a superset of the EX.
