hp32SII - netmonk - 08-21-2023 07:48 AM

Good morning,

Im new here, i apologise if i do any beginer mistake.

To summerise briefly, i bought for a few euros an hp32sII in a flea market.

The device is in very good state, and was functionnal (switch on, self test ok).

I didnt use it much as far as i also own 6 hp48gx.

So it stayed on a shelf like 3 years.

Few weeks ago, i wanted to use it, and i discover it doesn't switch on anymore.
Thinking about dead batteries, i purchased new ones and replaced. Same failure, doesn't switçh on anymore.

So i'm requesting some help here about how could i troubleshoot the issue, and if it is worth investigating and repairing.

Thank you.

I'm somewhat a beginner, but I'd start by measuring the battery voltage, making sure it is in spec. Then measure the current draw. Is it shorted? Is it trying to do anything at all?

If not trying to do anything at all, maybe the on key is having troubles?

As for whether it's worth saving... the 32sii is very useful as a compact calculator, but the DM32 replaces it neatly. It's not rare. It is better saved than scrapped, absolutely, but you don't need to be afraid of ruining something precious, so go ahead trying to save it and try to learn as much as possible in the process. That is generally the best use of something that is dead but replaceable!

Try this quick test. Press your finger and hold pressure on the area between the LCD and the top row of keys. While doing that press the On button and see if the calculator turns on. I have two of these Pioneer series that have that issue.

Also have a look at this.

Before opening the case, another simple thing to try is simply short the tow battery terminals in the battery bay. Just use something metal to touch both contacts for a few continuous seconds. Unexpectedly, using scissors is as easy as anything else. You need to do more than just touch them, hold it in place for 3-4 seconds.

While I'm not 100% sure of the mechanism here, I suppose this is somehow draining some residual current in some components, I've 'fixed' more than a few 'dead' Pioneer machines doing this.

It's easy, quick and non-damaging to try, so give it a shot.

Follow all of the non-destructive advice here in this thread first.

If you determine that it will turn on with slight pressure below the LCD, it’s the keyboard foam issue that is well known.

For that, I found Logan West’s repair video to be highly useful:

Let us know what you find is wrong with it!

There is a rumor there will be news about The Book at HHC in October. If it's not good news, we can threaten to not let the Author return to the great white North until it is released... what do you think, good plan?
