HP-UX 11i v1 TCOE install media wanted - brouhaha - 07-08-2024 07:25 AM

Do any HP-UX aficionados hang out here?

I have a brand new (yet 17-year-old) HP Workstation C8000, which came with a certificate granting a license to copy and use HP-UX TCOE on this machine. However, it was not provided with the actual install media, which HPE discontinued providing around 2015. HP's intention in selling the hardware with the license certificate but without the install media was that customers would either already have the media, or aquire it separately.

HP-UX 11i v1 (11.11) is the ONLY release of HP-UX that will run on it, and TCOE and MTOE are the only operating environments supported. The install media that will work has to be dated between December 2003 and December 2006. While I'd particularly like to get the December 2006 release, I'd be delighted to get any at all.

I'm willing to pay a reasonable amount for original install media, if anyone has a set that is superfluous to their requirements. Otherwise ISO images of either the CDs or DVD would be fine. Note that the ISO image _MUST_ be ripped straight from the disk; building a new ISO image from the files on the disk will NOT work properly. Windows does not provide software to do that, but third-party software can:
https://www.howtogeek.com/228886/how-to-create-iso-files-from-discs-on-windows-mac-and-linux/

Given that I have a legal license to copy and use the software, I don't believe that I am asking for piracy.

The C8000 was introduced in 2003 or 2004, and was the last PA-RISC workstation HP made. They made one later Itanium workstation, then abandoned the workstation market.

Oddly enough, while neither SCSI hard drive has a LIF filesystem as requried for normal boot, both have an HPPA ELF executable starting in block 0, which I cannot identify. I had hoped that maybe this was a software installer, but the ROM firmware will not even attempt to boot it.

Have you already checked here?
One is marked MCOE, don't know about the others.

Yes, I've done extensive searches, and looked specifically at that site.

MCOE is "Mission Critical Operating Environment", for servers, and not supported and probably not useful on workstations.

MTOE is "Minimum Technical Operating Environment", and TCOE is "Technical Computing Operating Environment", which are both for workstations. MTOE is a subset of TCOE.

Would this run on your system?

Unfortunately not. The last release of HP-UX that supports the C8000 is HP-UX 11i v1 (11.11) from December 2006, and HPE apparently stopped distributing that in 2015. Also, I probably couldn't have afforded to buy the media from them. While I have a license entitlement to copy and run, HPE wasn't under any obligation to provide the media other than by separate purchase, and now that it's out of support life, they no longer even have to do that.

If I were to buy HP-UX 11i v3 (latest), and a support contract, which would be big bucks, I would get downgrade rights, but it wouldn't help as HPE still wouldn't provide me ith 11i v1 media.

I spent a fair share of time with HP-UX (which I liked a lot) but stashing the install media didn’t occur to me, sorry :-( But I’m curious, is your interest purely academic or do you actually plan to run something on the machine? In the latter case, wouldn’t NetBSD suffice?

I do specifically need to run HP-UX executables, alas.

NetBSD doesn't support the C8000, though Debian Linux does.

The C8000 was the last, and highest performance HPPA workstation. They made only two modesl of Itanium workstations, before exiting the workstation market.

this should work on a C8000: http://osarchive.org/os/hpux/OS/11.11/2004-12%20MCOE%2C%20TCOE%2C%20Apps

Thank you. It turns out that 2004-12 doesn't support the AD385 10G NIC, though it will work fine with the C8000 integrated 1G NIC.

Someone in a different forum was kind enough to provide 2006-12 MTOE, though I'm still looking for TCOE.
