Hp 82164A versions - dbrothers - 09-06-2024 01:23 AM Through EBay, I’ve just received an 82164A HP-IL/RS232 converter. According to the included manual (82164-90002, March 1983) there’s a jumper that can be flipped between DTE and DCE connections on the 25-pin connector. DTE is the “as shipped” default. My unit has no such jumper, and an RS232 breakout with LEDs suggests it’s hard-wired as DTE (i.e., TD on pin 2). A label on the circuit board says 82164 (no “A”). Was there a version prior to the “A” version with no DTE/DCE jumper? Inquiring minds want to know. I don’t mind that it’s fixed at DTE - I can work with that. How could I have seen what was printed on the circuit board otherwise? RE: Hp 82164A versions - KeithB - 09-06-2024 05:03 PM It is not a "jumper", it is a "jumper unit" like a little IC with lots of jumpers. Here is the picture from the manual: [attachment=13910] If you *don't* have one of these, send us a picture of your board. RE: Hp 82164A versions - KeithB - 09-06-2024 05:12 PM Just for the record, here is the inside of my unit, no "A" that I can see: [attachment=13911] RE: Hp 82164A versions - twoweims - 09-06-2024 05:34 PM [attachment=13912] You just remove the entire jumper block and flip it around so that the notch points to whichever mode you want... Here is the picture from the manual: I’m well aware of what the manual shows. That component is simply not there on my board, nor are there pads or traces for it. It’s very clear that there was a design change during the production run, and the manual describes the more recent units (or possibly what fell into my hands is a prototype, before they decided to add that feature). I should have taken a picture while I had the unit open; I’m reluctant to open it up again. It's just a few screws on the bottom... RE: Hp 82164A versions - KeithB - 09-06-2024 07:06 PM "I’m reluctant to open it up again. " The normal one is *made* to be opened. I showed you mine, now you show me yours. 8^) RE: Hp 82164A versions - KeithB - 09-09-2024 07:47 PM Oh, and to answer your question, I don't think anyone has seen any other version of the converter, which is why we are so curious to see inside yours. |
