Casio fx-4500P: Nice looking pocket machine made in China - jebem - 02-22-2015 12:31 PM

This classic 1989 scientific programmable Casio fx-4500P in a small package seems to be a nice looking and powerful machine and good value for the money.
Good samples can be found at 10 Euros. Mine was only 5 Euro in a flea market.

Among its features are trigonometric, hyperbolic, logarithmic, coordinates, permutations and combinations, fractions, engineering symbols (from femto to tera), binary/octal/decimal/hexadecimal number conversions and calculations, statistical, and integration.
It features full text alphabet characters, formulas and programming.
As standard setup it includes 26 variables (configurable up to 163) and 1103 program steps. Memory management includes a command to show remaining free memory.
Programming includes editing and debugging features. Instructions includes jumps and conditional jumps, subroutines, input and pause.

Sin(Pi) according to Casio machines.

Hi José. Look at the internals of my FX-4500P.
It has a completely visible SoC Toshiba T9977 dated on year 92, week 40.
I have no clue about what this chip is. (maybe with another nomenclature by NEC....)

I just got a fx-4500P, and i wonder if i can use a CR-2032 battery instead of the CR-2025 that is specifeid. The only difference seems to be the thikness off the battery cell.

edit. My fx4500P is made in Japan. Is there any difference to the China made fx-4500P ?

That is the only difference.

2025 means 20mm wide and 2.5mm thick
2032 means 20mm wide and 3.2mm thick
both are 3V

But if you insert the 2032, it could stretch the metal contacts (or feasibly break it) such that it will not take 2025's in the future.

Wow! That has a remarkably modern construction for 1989. Epoxy covered chip-on-board and the heat seal flex ribbon connection to the LCD are technologies I expect today, not in 1989. And made in China? I don't think I had much in the way of electronics made in China in 1989.

Maybe the production ended later than 1989. I happen to have two specimens, one made in Japan, the other made in China. I recall that when I was taking them apart for cleaning, the Japanese one was very "tidy", no epoxy and such, while the Chinese one looked somewhat messy. I'm not an electronics hobbyist so it's a very superficial and possibly unjust view. Anyway, the boards were visually very distinct. I guess that there were years between the introduction to the market in 1989 and then moving the production to China, which included some assembly changes as well.

Another difference I can see on my two machines is faceplates. The Japanese one has a very ugly problem, it's covered with some strange thin layer that is very slowly peeling off but in no way I can't remove it. The Chinese one is fine in this respect but overall I think the faceplace was poorly designed anyway because the labels of the shifted functions are quite hard to read. The predecessor - fx-4000P - is not only better looking, it's better ergonomically. To me, the fx-4000P is the best of all Casio programmables. IMHO there hasn't been a "classy" model since then...

I put a CR-2032 in my fx-4500P, and it seems to work just fine.
I have just started to use it a bit, some small programs etc., but i must say, this is a really lovely calculator!

I just noticed thats there is a fx-4500PA model also.
Anyone know whats the difference of that model is to the fx-4500P?

Hello,

If it's the same as with the FX 180P et 180 PA: PA slower but less consumption than the P

Hello, For me the Fx-5800P is a very good and attractive machine (not graphical, Solve, Integrate, Matrix, Complex, ... 27Kb Casio Basic, Editable Stat lists)

I have also noticed this! Very annoying for such a great machine!
Is there really no solution to remove this thin layer "gunk" without remove the faceplate symbols also? Maybe some petroleum based solvents? I guess alcohol based things will also remove the faceplate symbols...

The Radio Shack version of this model is pretty bad too. I think it's got the same plastic layer you're talking about. Keyboard readability is lousy. Plus they made some rather weird (and not good) changes to the programming language, with the bizarre use of FixM, { }, and =, which persisted through the fx-4800P and fx-4850P. Thankfully the fx-5800P went back to the more traditional Casio syntax seen on the graphing calculators.

I think have a small success to remove the gunk. I use what is called "Fotogen" in swedish, i think the english word is Kerosene. I applied it and let it sunk in some time, and then i can bit for bit get the gunk junk off. But its a slow process. The faceplate symbols seems to stay intact at least.

The power consumption and speed of both models is similar. Only the size of the battery has changed.

FX-4500P: 1x CR1216 for backup and 1x CR2025 for 3000 operating hours.

FX-4500PA: 1x CR2032 for backup and 1x CR2032 for 5000 operating hours.

Thanks for the information! So its only the battery specifications thats differs. Not any difference in functions etc. ? One can wonder why?
