SwissMicros DM-41 - dramsey - 04-20-2015 12:29 AM

The SwissMicros folks now have an HP-41 clone in the same "miniature Pioneer" form factor as their other calculators. It includes a real-time clock and extended memory.

Looks pretty cool:

That would be miniature Voyager...

They must have emailed news of the new model to their entire mailing list today; this is the 3rd or 4th message about the new 41 model today.

My takeaway? Get on the Swiss Micros mailing list ASAP. Smile

Got one! Wink Can't wait until it arrives.

RE: SwissMicros DM-41 - hpnut - 04-20-2015 06:20 AM

I placed my order today, with blue leather pouch.

When it arrives, I have bragging rights for the first DM-41 in Malaysia :-)

cheers,

hpnut in Putrajaya, Malaysia

I got an email (while reading my email on my iPhone in bed), got out of bed, and went to a laptop to place an order!!! A small HP-41 ... how cool!

Working now, firmware is now V18.

I can't get SST & BST to work, neither in Programme nor Catalogue.

Does anyone else have this problem?

I've re-purposed a DM-15 Silver Edition temporarely, and that doesn't show this behaviour. BST and SST take me through the program as well as through the Catalogue. The calc can't be switched off with the "ON" button. I have to XEQ "OFF".

Did you re-flash the calc to see if that makes any difference?

Have now reflashed with V18 & sst and bst working correctly.

RE: SwissMicros DM-41 - Gerald H - 04-24-2015 10:29 AM

I've now entered my essential number theory programmes & they run beautifully.

A strange phenomenon: the print on the keyboard is titchy yet more readable than most of the blue smudges on the Prime.

RE: SwissMicros DM-41 - Massimo Gnerucci - 04-24-2015 01:19 PM

Just got mine (10 minutes ago).
Feels heavier than its siblings (brass housing?).
Keyboard seems slightly better.
At first sight, twice as fast as the original.
Nice in the flip-open pouch.

Completely dislike landscape format and hunt for the right key.
A blue key?!? o.O

Let's go on playing :)

I've measured the speed using the Calculator Benchmark and reported the values to Xerxes. My findings are that @48Mhz the DM-41 is only slightly faster than an HP-41. Hmm, did I something wrong? It was quite late in the evening ... When looking at the HP-15C/DM-15C numbers I'd expected a higher speedup.

I like the landscape format. I hold the DM-41 with both hands and type with my thumbs. However, I confirm the "key hunt". It's a matter of getting used to.

Two thumbs over that little area? Even with one thumb alone, aren't you pressing more than one key frequently?

d:-?

Yes, I did the same some hours later, found your same results, was about to send them to Xerxes but... I refreshed the results' page and there they already were... Smile

My first impression was due to a simple addition loop. Probably different instructions take different performance increase.

I can't stand the vertical ENTER but, above all, the operator keys are in the middle of nowhere.
My tagline refers to a vertical layout...

No, it works fine, perhaps as I'm also credit card sized ;-). Of course typing is not as fast as on a real 41. For such a small calculator I think the landscape format is the only thing that works.

RE: SwissMicros DM-41 - Namir - 04-27-2015 08:11 PM

My two DM41 units arrived. They are very cool. I need one of little pens used in some games to better press the buttons.

Thank you Michael!!!

Swiss Micros Firmware Update Tool - Trojan? - Jeff_Kearns - 04-27-2015 10:33 PM

Has anyone tried executing the SwissMicros Firmware Update Tool for flashing the calculator?

It hasn't worked for me and my antivirus reports it being a trojan virus. Would appreciate feedback. I have deleted it from my system.

Jeff

I had no problems with it. However, it order to get it to run I held the PGM button on the calculator down, then pressed the Program button on the GUI. When it's done, press the RESET button on the calc.

Many AV programs will give a false-positive indication as malware for rarely encountered programs and this is very likely a rare program (when considered against all programs out there).

Norton products do this all the time, though they note that reason for flagging the file is because it is unknown, as opposed to known-bad.

It's very likely the program is OK and not the cause of your issues.
