WP 34S Displayformat - smtschmidt - 06-05-2015 08:47 AM

My prefered notification is ALL 2 and ENGOVR. Up to 2 zeros can appear after the decimal mark before the display switches to engineering notation.

It works perfectly with irrationional numbers but i think it doesn't work with short rational numbers:
5 1/x > 0,2
10 / > 0,02
10 / > 0,002
10 / > 0,0002
and so on up to 10 zeros after the decimal mark.

Is this a bug or a feature?

Many thanks in advance,
Michael

Hi,

I think it is a feature. Look at the green manual, p.72: ALL displays all digits as long as they fit the display width; it will switch to SCI (or ENG) only to avoid flowing over the display limits. With your number, no flowing happens.

Best regards,

Pascal

Hi Pascal,
sorry, I am a relative new user of HP-calculators. I brought a HP-50g three years ago and I'm not so happy with it. One reason is the circumstantial change of the display-mode. I am an electrical engineer and i'll never use a number like 0,002. On the HP-50g I have always to switch the mode manualy. Annoying!

So I was very interested in the WP 34S cause I read in the beginner guide about ALL n, ENGOVR and DISP n.
When I get it right, I have to type ALL 0 on the WP34S to get the same as with ALL in the HP-42S. But the ALL n (n>0) should allow n-1 zeros on the right side of the radix-mark.

I am not sure, but thats how I interpret the manuals.

kind regards
Michael

Right. 1/3 is then displayed as 3,33333333333 E–1.

That's the way it works, yes.

There are two simple rules for ALL n:
1. If the number fits the display completely and a switch to scientific notation is not required, show it in FIX mode.
2. If the number does not fit the display AND it is less than 10–n, the display switches to SCI (or ENG if ENGOVR is set).

If I get you right, you want the SCI/ENG switch for ANY number that is below a certain threshold, e.g. below 0,01. So that for instance 0,00012345 is displayed as 1,2345 E–4 (or 123,45 E–6) although it would fit the display in FIX mode. I do not know how this could be accomplished.

Hi Dieter,
thanks for your explanation.

I didnt get the AND. My fault.

Yes, that's what I want. My TI57 did it 35 years ago and I think every Casio or Sharp do so. When my students present me a result of 0,0001234kg or somethink like 1,45 * 10^0 meter, they are kidding me.

I can't believe it!

Are you sure? So 10–6 is displayed as 1 E–6 and not 0,000001 ?

That's not the calculator's fault. #-)
Obviously there are some basics that you cannot expect (today).
