HP 5082-7300 Dot Matrix Displays ?? - vk6ti - 01-19-2016 06:52 AM Hi Folks, friend gave me these numeric displays as he knew I was into HP gear, I have never come across them before and I don't know anything about them, I guess they are from the 70's, ( a bit out of my timescape ) Anyone know if they were used for specific HP test gear or instrument, or for the general electronic designer ?, I don't think I have ever seen them used on a calculating instument, or any machine for that matter. image attached Thanks in advance Ray RE: HP 5082-7300 Dot Matrix Displays ?? - Accutron - 01-19-2016 09:48 AM 5082-73xx / HDSP-096x displays were sold on the open market, and were a direct competitor to the Texas Instruments TIL308/309/311. The family includes both decimal and hexadecimal indicators. They have an onboard BCD decoder and a tiny amount of memory, and they operate at TTL voltage levels. The -7300 is a decimal indicator, the -7340 is the hexadecimal version, and there are other part numbers which serve as overflow indicators and such. Some part numbers are packaged in red epoxy, while others are packaged in ceramic and glass. They're not actually a bitmap display, but rather function more like a 7-segment display with extra elements to improve character geometry. They're a very common display family, and I've seen them used in all sorts of digital meters, counters, aerospace equipment, etc, but I don't think they were ever used in any HP calculators. As far as I know, all of the HP desktop calculators with large LED displays use either a 5082-71xx multi-character bitmap dumb display, or a HDSP-20xx four-character bitmap display with integrated shift registers.
