HP 50g on Amazon for only $47.99 - Michael de Estrada - 01-28-2016 05:12 PM

I just thought I'd alert everyone of this great deal on what will most likely be the last generation of RPL calculators from HP. I already own two of these calculators, which I use a lot more than my Prime, and will just stash it in my closet unopened in its package for use in the distant future.

They've had this same price, off and on, for over a month. I got one and it arrived in sealed, perfect condition. I've just set it aside, but I'm tempted to open it to verify LCD and keyboard, as I've read that several folks got bad units in these super-cheap deals. While it's very unlikely the case that it is bad, it's probably good to verify, since in truth I really won't sell it anyhow, so the only person to consider it "worth less due to open pkg" is me.

I sell HP - 48gii and HP - 50g from a quality producer, all together with the complete set of AUR - UG, for them all for $45. For me cheaper even to throw out it in garbage. We live in the different worlds :-))

If you are selling a new 50g with printed AUR and UG for $45, I will order several. If the docs are just PDF, and/or the machine is not new with warranty, then this deal is not better than the one being discussed. Maybe I've missed your point?

I have finished my afairs. The last set: not new HP-50 ($25) and HP-48gii ($20) in perfect condition and quality, with paper AUR/UG manuals . But for the sake of these balances, I do not sell at a loss. You have missed my point, yes. According to the laws of the market these undergoes disposal (sorry for my bad English).

Something was lost in the translation...

It's too bad HP leaning away from their engineering scientific fan base to satisfy the mass. I might get a Prime just to have one in my collection but it will probably be the most worthless one in my collection. I think HP50g will start to go up in value...

I strongly doubt it.

Maybe in a few decades?

If it will happen, then the Chinese businessmen will offer to us cheap defective НР-50, as it happened with HP-39gii and Prime.

Where did you read this ? There are nearly 700 reviews on Amazon, including many in the last few months, and I cannot find any mention of these problems. About the only reason I can see to open the package is to remove the AAA alkaline batteries before they get old and start leaking. I have no intention of reselling it either, so my only reason to leave it in the package is to protect it until the day arrives when the other units malfunction and need to be replaced.

Michael - Though not 100% certain, I believe I read here on MoHPC Forums. I'd say it was within the last 6 months, perhaps less, so you may want to search. But as I noted, it's pretty unlikely, particularly coming from Amazon. The only point is that if you don't care about collect/selling value of sealed pkg, then open it to check, as the warranty won't do you much good years from now.

Given the quality of the builds in the last decade(s), I don't think "leave it the package" is a good strategy...

RE: HP 50g on Amazon for only $47.99 - Michael de Estrada - 02-05-2016 04:48 PM

Update - I received my new HP 50g last Wednesday, and based on the serial number it was manufactured approximately 10 months ago, so it appears that HP is still cranking these things out. This explains why the prices have continued to decline as demand has not kept up with supply. Meanwhile, Amazon no longer offers this calculator at the low price I paid for it, and instead now has it listed as a Prime member exclusive for a much higher price ($62.66). Go figure. The current best price I could find from alternate sellers on Amazon is about $59, which is still a good price. Unless HP decides to add RPL capability to the Prime at some time in the future, this appears to be the end of the line for RPL.

BEST BUY still has it for $47.99 with FREE shipping.

Until you try to buy one. They're listed as "not available" for shipping, and my local store didn't have one in stock. They tell me that their software doesn't allow them to search other stores. I came home and searched specific zip codes on their website for places that had them in stock, but finally gave up. If someone has a better strategy, I'm all ears.

When I look today, Amazon Prime price is $57.73 - striegel - 02-05-2016 06:03 PM

That price might vary by individual because when I search today on Amazon.com for the HP 50G, it still shows the $57.73 it has been offering me for the last several weeks. That includes free shipping as an Amazon Prime customer.
Is it adding sales tax into your price? It does not for me.

This is also Best Buy, and it says "in store pickup". When I look at all my local stores that are listed there, it says "out of stock". I don't see any indication that they will actually ship it directly to you.

That is not Amazon, but a third party seller (Firemall LLC), and the shipping would be free even if you weren't an Amazon Prime member. Also, there is no tax collected, unless you buy it directly from Amazon as I did, so I actually paid $47.99 + 8.25% Texas sales tax = $51.95 for mine.
