Calculator Repair problem - beeker567 - 02-13-2014 04:05 AM

Hello Community,

I sent my beloved HP48G to Randy at FixThatCalc almost 1 yr ago for repair. Throughout the year he updated with emails regarding his backlog and health issues.

In December he sent out a message saying he was getting back to work and would give us a new repair update at the end of January. After that, there was radio silence.

I have sent him emails, all of which have been returned. His website says the domain name has expired, and the telephone message requests you to visit his website.

Is there anyone else out there with this similar situation? Or anyone that knows him personally that may know if his health issues returned? I would simply like to get a hold of him and ask for my calculator to be sent back, unrepaired.

Thank you.

The site http://www.fixthatcalc.com/news.php is online... I have no idea about anything else.

No problems reaching http://www.fixthatcalc.com/

The URL resolves, but all we are getting is a very annoying pablum site put together by the domain name seller or the web host. It looks like a page, but all of the links are very generic and low in useful content, like ask dott com.
Expired websites never die, their menus just become lists of 10^6 variations on SpamĀ®.

That is weird. I suspect there is a DNS problem somewhere.

I see a real site, with all links valid and what I would expect to see.

Try this:

What I get now, and have always gotten throughout this discussion, is the normal, valid fixthatcalc.com pages. I've never gotten any kind of message saying the site was down or unavailable or that the domain expired or anything like that. I took screenshots just now and then reduced them to require less data (around 50K each in .jpg with some compression), but even after using "Add Attachment" and "Insert Into Post," the preview didn't show them.

I tried your IP address and it works fine. I did a ping on the domain name and it resolved to the same IP as the one you found.
However, when I follow http://www.fixthatcalc.com, I get the entirely different web page shown in the attached picture.

Garth Wilson: I didn't see my screen capture image in the preview either, but it appeared correctly when I posted.

Thank you, I see that he has a page up and running. I have sent another message through that site, and I will hope to get a response.

No, my DNS always resolved the domain to the correct IP and I always saw the true FixThatCalc site. No fake links whatsoever.

I'm sure we would all send best wishes to the man and hopes he returns to good health soon so that he can continue providing what is a unique and valuable service for many happy customers.

Well said everyone about Randy and his health. We are lucky to have someone out there who can still work with our old favorites. However, even throughout his "blackout periods" which he attributed to various health issues last year he was usually fairly responsive and still sent general messages with updates.

What is happening right now is complete radio silence, alarming since especially just this past December he gave an exact date of January 25 that we would be getting new repair completion dates. My calculator has been out there since last June, and I simply want it back, even un-repaired at this point!

I hope Randy's health returns. Until then though, for units needing repair that have not been sent in yet, there's also Bruce Larrabee's repair service, at http://www.vintagecalculatorrepair.com/index.php .

Unfortunately Bruce has just undergone surgery and he is now recovering.
He is supposed to contact me after his recovery.
I'll update this thread when he does.
Best regards,
Sylvain

2014-03-07 : Bruce has resumed his calculator repair activities! 8-)
