New HP 9825 story: Trees, Lawsuits, and a resurrected HP 9825 - sleibson - 03-15-2014 03:58 AM

Recently, I was contacted by a retired forestry professor with a fascinating story of trees, lawsuits, expert witness testimony, and the resurrection of an HP 9825 to read old DC100 tapes. You'll find a link to the PDF with this unusual story in the last paragraph of this page on the site:

Wow, what a great story! While I appreciated the 9825, I didn't get a chance to use one until 1979 when I joined HP and was issued a 9835. With its HP BASIC and screen, it kept me happy until the 9836 came along. But I did get an otherwise unused lab 9825 searching for prime numbers for fun over two months straight.

Great machines produced by great people!

Absolutely great! The real intellectual science thriller.

A great reading, and a testimony of times when things were done the right way (called differently nowadays... euphemisms reign).

For any fans of the 9825 or other old HP's that use the DC100 cartridges, I am working on a Tape Drive Emulator for the 9825.

The plan is to use a micro controller to emulate the tape drive, giving us the ability to store programs and data on an SD card instead of DC100.

I know there are still a lot of these units out there, I don't know how many people are actively using them.

If anyone has any technical information or expertise that they would be willing to offer to the project then by all means please make contact. I know there would be retired people out there that know the 9825 inside out and upside down and would be a massive asset in this development.

If you have a 9825 and would like to see an emulator of this type let me know, any support/encouragement with this project would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Chris Robertson

That's a great idea! While I no longer have a 9825 I do have a 9815 and it uses the same DC100 (or DC1000, BTW) tapes. It would be wonderful if your SD card project encompassed the 9815 too. I don't know if you'd need to do anything special to make that happen. I suppose that it depends on what level you're emulating the tape drive. If you're basically replacing the tape head with no knowledge needed about the data format I would think that any machine that uses DC100 tapes would be able to make use of your project.

I would definitely be interested in one.

On a tangent, has anyone managed to image the 98228A disk ROM or know of where to find one?

Yes, Chris, I'd be interested. Good luck with the project
