New G2 received... wicked fast!
I finally(!) pulled the trigger on the HP Prime for my son, who will be attending an IB High School next year. I decided to go ahead and get the G2 version since it seems pretty superior to any version currently available here in the U.S. I found the best deal I could online at Oxford Educational Supplies, and wanted to give a shout out to them for their good price and uber-quick turnaround time:

Price: £94.95
Shipping (UPS): £20.00
Total: £114.95 (about $151.78 at today's exchange rate)

I ordered on Sunday.

£20.00 for shipping isn't exactly cheap, but I still didn't expect this thing to arrive (U.S.) before next month - at the earliest - and I was willing and prepared to wait that long.

It arrived this morning (Wednesday!!) packed very securely and in perfect condition. Now THAT is pretty quick!

So in summary, if you're in the U.S. and are looking for a Prime G2, I highly recommend Oxford Educational Supplies in the UK. Well done!

Well I doubt very much you'd find an HP Prime in an actual shop. It's all Casios over here!

Can you still get warranty support in the US if you buy from Europe? I have the original Prime and it is still working, but I like to get warranty support on a new purchase.

No. If you purchase in the EU then your warranty will only be valid in the EU.

I wonder where you stand if you buy in Europe and then next week your little island is booted out of Europe? ?

If/when that happens, and I hope it still might not, we have a lot bigger things to worry about! Sad

Not so much "booted out" as "throwing itself off a cliff, lemming style"!

From Manchester you have an option to rally Scotland and remain European.

Now now, let's not get into a political battle Smile

Some think that Brexit is the stupidest thing to happen to the UK in its entire existence. Some think it can't come soon enough. The two camps will not agree so time will have to tell who is right.

Either way round it doesn't have much to do with a G2 Prime!

Well, for the rest of us, if it depresses the Pound Sterling for a bit, buying through Oxford Educational Supplies will get even cheaper :-)

One thing: On their website, it certainly says "G2", but the picture depicts an early version that even has the old light blue shift key. I presume for some odd reason, they just haven't updated that? Everybody is actually getting the G2 they expect, right?

Even HP haven't updated the image on their own websites. In a nutshell, there are no stock pictures of anything newer than the Rev. A version.

Is there anything different apart from key color contrast and the 3 dots (led emitters?) on top side?

The Wiki site is nice, but implies there are only 2 Prime hardware variants, when there are more (four?).
*If it has a light blue shift key, it's definitely one of the older ones.
*If it has a dark blue shift key, it MIGHT be the latest G2, but not necessarily so. Actually, if used, it's highly unlikely it's the G2 at this point, since they are quite new and still it seems only being distributed through European retailers, not in the USA yet.

[update: This Prime-specific Wiki site covers the hardware differences...scroll down https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP_Prime]

Really, I think you need to look on the back for the telltale "G2" indications. That is pretty clear.

If I were to buy one (and I need to first play with the free Android version as Tim suggests and make sure I won't hate it), I would certainly pay a few extra $ and get the G2 even if that requires overseas shipment.

I can confirm that the Prime I got from Oxford Educational Supplies last week is a G2.

It's always a good idea to try-before-you-buy, but don't cut off your nose to spite your face. Smile I hated the Android version (had it on my last phone, but never installed on my new one). There is no substitute for the larger size (at least compared to my Android phone - Galaxy S7) and hard keys of a 'real' calculator. Basically, I'm glad that I threw caution to the wind and bought the G2 despite despising the Android version of the Prime.
