RE: Collection of HHC programming contests and other useful documents
.
Allow me to stand in for anyone who doesn't use or understand torrents. How much stuff would I be downloading, in GBytes? Would I need to get several torrents, or is there a single latest one with everything? If there's a subsequent update, would I end up re-downloading all the stuff I'd already got? Any chance of also uploading to the Internet Archive? They take anything and they keep it forever. It remains publicly accessible so long as there's no copyright claim on it. It seems to me like a good backup for any particular technique. |

Thanks. I do favour decentralisation, but I think torrents in particular do well with a critical mass, and one never knows the lifetime of an interest, so other approaches are useful in parallel.
As it happens, my network setup only allows me to download, not to share, so I can't help with the community aspect. I am now downloading three torrents, I think - ETA 4 days - and one torrent is stuck with no peers (hp_calc_torrent_u201805_as_a_zip_due_to_the_size.zip) |

Yes the mass is important too, but I have quite some experience and although torrent is not ed2k, some things can last long as well. It is the same with websites like this one, there should be someone paying the bill at the end. Casiocalc.org was almost closed a couple of years ago but found a way to be moved. This to say, if there is no interest everything that is private or based on few individuals will go down as long as it is digital (digital things are very fragile). I also understand that there are networks were sharing is not easy (natted for example) thus if someone can upload it on other systems that aren't community based, it is great. The other torrent you mention has at least me as a source and the DHT is working, so no idea. Maybe you need to wait. I see that someone is getting data from 3 torrents. Ah, yes, it seems my setup only wanted to pull from three torrents at a time, so the fourth one is now pulling actively now that the first one is done. My mistake!

RE: Collection of HHC programming contests and other useful documents
little info. My homelab had once again an encounter with entropy (a system went down) and due to my chronical scarcity of time it will take a while for me to fix it and bring the torrents online again.

RE: Collection of HHC programming contests and other useful documents
update. Unfortunately my replacing system somehow crashes pretty regularly with torrent clients. I try every now and then (time scarcity) but it is not yet solved. I may solve it or move to ed2k network (but there it works only with single large archive files, rather than a large collection of files)

If someone has these files offline, please considering placing them online so I can then begin hosting them. Try CC41! |

Strange. I've been seeding some of those for years (hp_calc_torrent and hp_calc_torrent_u201805), with almost 200 GB uploaded. I'm surprised I'm not showing up as a peer; others have been able to download from me in recent months (for example, I've uploaded over 100 GB on my hpcalc.org torrent since January). That said, almost everything in hp_calc_torrent is already on the HHC USB Drive that you have, and most of it is duplicated from my torrents or elsewhere on my site anyway, and the hp_calc_torrent_u201805 has been reformatted and both hosted on my HP Museum Forum torrent and included on the USB drive. I don't think I recall what was on hp_calc_torrent_u201809 or hp_calc_torrent_u201910, or whether I was even able to get them. If, following the nomenclature of hp_calc_torrent_u201805 they have the same content but updated, I never was able to get them either. |

I'm also seeding hp_calc_torrent.
I've seen hp_calc_torrent_u201809 and hp_calc_torrent_u201910, but didn't know what they were for. Well here are some listings from btcheck -l btcheck -l hp_calc_torrent_u201809.torrent Code: Base directory : hp_calc_torrent_u201809 btcheck -l hp_calc_torrent_u201910.torrent Code: Base directory : hp_calc_torrent_u201910 — Ian Abbott |

I was trying - the last time I spent some time on it was in 2019, since then i tried to keep things alive in the network - to get all the bits I could find online and put them there. I have the HPmuseum (although from pre 2018) and the PPC data (again pre 2018) and I remember there was some overlap but not that heavy. Maybe I checked wrongly. But you are right you formatted better the hpmuseum. So actually the 201805 data could be left on its own (I hope the attachments are there too on the formatte version!) I kept the first post of this thread updated so the data is in 4 torrents. 1 base torrent, 1 extra too big (201805) and two small extras waiting for more work to be then merged. as in the first post (as of 2022-06-02) the magnets are Code:
Actually there is a 5th torrent not yet released, those are mostly documents but very few. I still have all the data, but somehow the torrent clients that I used on the previous server crash continously on the new one (although the OS configuration is very close). I get 2-3 hours of running time and then crush and I didn't yet find the time to debug that. I could put the data on onedrive or the like too, but that defeats the point of having a p2p shared approach that can persist over time with community efforts. Eric many thanks that you donated 200 GB in upload for those collections! I remember I myself (the original source!) gave around 30 GB and not more. There are some torrents here https://www.hpcalc.org/torrents/ that on my previous system (the stable one) got much more data in output that the torrents I cared for. In particular hpcalc.org (although there was another peer that blasted be out of the way, I believe that was Eric himself. I could just give 300 Mb and then the client were already done and happy) and the one about the 41 calc (on that one there were more peers though). I'll try to find a way. In the worst case I have to try mldonkey or transmission but I am not sure how they work with previous versions of cygwin (or I fire a little VM just for those, but I'd like to keep the maintainance down). I've been using rtorrent for many years, although it does suffer from the occasional crash - probably a slow memory leak somewhere. Since it is terminal based, I run it in a GNU Screen session. I was under the impression that in the US there were laws against monopolies as they are not great for consumers(or at least regional governments would require providers to keep up with the technology without blowing prices) . 5 Mbps in a city in a developed country in 2022 is a travesty. I have the second smallest connection that my provider offers. 50/10 (50 down/10 Mbps up). Meanwhile they have also 100/40, 250/40, 1000/50 and my provider is not really providing that much compared to other cities (though what is important is the upload and many customers don't get it. If they want to have a videocall or a little website/sharing files upload is crucial). Wikis are great, Contribute :) |

At the moment I am not sharing. for the client, I am using a windows system, for that I mentioned "maybe I'll try cygwin". Normally qbittorent or the classical uT 2.2.1 . qbittorent though forgets at times the index of large collection so it is annoying. (interesting there aren't even that many clients available. One is offline-browseable in the same format as my Usenet archives. That's what you can download in my torrent. But when AT&T laid fiber in my city some years back, they somehow forgot my half of my block (or at least forgot to map it -- 17 houses are affected), so they won't let me sign up for it. So I only have one choice, not two like most people. I just got really unlucky. |
