Testing HP821634 A Video Interface
Hi, years ago, I bought a HP821634A video interface from the USA well, I've never used it and I want to sell it. So, I've tried testing it. So, I hooked it up to a TV and no joy. I then looked further (back page of the manual!) and found out that one needs a HP 82163B for the UK and that will only work with a monitor!!! 8-(
So, am I wasting my time with this and should, really, get it recycled? Or, is there some adapter that I can get to hook the composite output up to a modern monitor? Any thoughts/advice will be much appreciated. |

RE: Testing HP821634 A Video Interface
I use a old VP-413 from KRAMER Tools to connect my HP82163B to a TFT-Monitor with VGA-Input. That works great and should also do with a HP82163A. Today there are many cheap video converter, from video to vga or from video to dvi/hdmi. All should work for a test. The best result i have ever seen is with the old converter from Kramer Tools. After power on the picture is black with a blinking rectangle white cursor in the upper left corner.

Whatever you do, please, please do not put it in the recycling (as in E-waste). eBay it, or in some other way get it into the hands of someone else who would appreciate and use it. (FWIW, I have the HP92198 80-column HP-IL video interface and a Zenith monitor to use it with.) http://WilsonMinesCo.com (Lots of HP-41 links at the bottom of the links page, at http://wilsonminesco.com/links.html#hp41 ) |

RE: Testing HP821634 A Video Interface
In the past I have used a USB TV dongle with this video interface. This can be set to both PAL (Europe) and NTSC (US) TV standards and you can see the display in a window on your PC. When you use one with a composite input as well almost all possible options are covered.

RE: Testing HP821634 A Video Interface
There was quite the discussion regarding composite adapters on HPSeries80 at Groups.io.
https://groups.io/g/hpseries80/topic/76321012# Summary: Some adapters are much better than others and some don't work well at all. |

RE: Testing HP82163 A Video Interface
When reading this I had a vague recollection of the topic being discussed some time ago.
I found it - maybe this will help 82163 A/B The idea with the Kramer box is not bad - found this Alternative (09-11-2021 04:33 PM)johnquirke1000 Wrote: Hi, years ago, I bought a HP821634A video interface from the USA well, I've never used it and I want to sell it. RE: Testing HP821634 A Video Interface
Thanks to all of you for taking the time to reply and, as a thank you, I've emailed you all separately. Essentially, I can't justify the cost of the specialist equipment and the articles have outlined why the simple £8 cable from ebay won't work. So, much as it pains me I'll be ebaying as is.
Thanks again guys |
