Wondering which is the first HP calculator to offer a primary root to y root (x) so as to avoid throwing an error in cases such as 3 root (-8), or producing an imaginary result?

All the RPL models, starting with the HP 28C, have offered d/dx.

I would say the HP-48SX followed by the HP-32SII which both have a secondary X Root Y function on their keyboard and return -2 for 3 Root (-8).
