A little bit off topic perhaps, but the Aug-1987 HP Journal covers the HP-28C/S and also explains why RPL was chosen:
The HP-28C firmware was developed in a year by a small team using the RPL operating system and language (see the article on page 21). The use of a highly structured language was necessary for the implementation of symbolic mathe matics, but also yielded a significant increase in productiv ity compared with previous products, which were coded entirely in assembly language.
