First Star Trek. Could NUMB3RS be next?
Hi all.
We all have heard that Star Trek influenced most people to become scientists, astrophysicists, engineers, etc. How about the CBS series, NUMB3RS? Have you heard of people to pursue careers in the sciences? |

Hello,
my instinctive answer would have been very similar, but "Claude" is just so much better in writing decent english: "While "NUMB3RS" likely had a positive impact on mathematics interest and education, its effect was probably more subtle and localized compared to broader STEM initiatives. The show's educational outreach efforts were notable, but its shorter run and more niche audience compared to "The Big Bang Theory" might have limited its overall impact on enrollment trends." Ah yes, the Young Sheldon sequel (AKA The Big Bang Theory). Not sure where I viewed it, but the video centered around a perpetual scholarship Chuck Lorre initiated for university/college students pursuing degrees in the sciences.

The main problem is the decline in network TV viewership. Star Trek was one of pretty much 3 options, so had a large familiarity.
At the time of Numbe3rs there were hundreds of options and a divided viewership. Personally, I have a lot more knowledge of Big Bang Theory than Numb3rs. |

I watched two or three episodes of Numb3rs but didn't like some of the characters so I watched something else instead. It is my free time and I don't have to spend that with people I don't like... Of the Big Bang Theory I saw many more episodes, mostly because it is still being repeated on different TV stations in Germany, so whilst zapping around waiting for the news, chances are high to stumble over an episode of it. But it is not really a show I would watch out of my free will, probably because I am rather too old for it. Our son watched a lot of Big Bang Theory when it came out, but it didn't turn him into a scientist. Regards Max |
