need help with w34s cable
I'm building a programming cable for the w34s. Can anyone tell me which signals to connect to the ADM3202 chips pins 11,12,13 and 14. I've tried various combinations but haven't been about to get a read with MySamba. Also if I have connected correctly what other issues may be causing my problem?
Thanks

RE: need help with w34s cable
Why are you building a RS232 cable? This makes most sense if you have an older PC which offers a standard serial port. For all other cases, a direct connection to a FTDI USB-to-3V-TTL-serial converter (see http://www.ftdichip.com/Products/Cables/...Serial.htm) is the better solution. The newer cables even deliver 3.3V power and can be directly connected to VBat (remove the batteries first!).

The pinout of the programming connector can be found in the HP20b schematics delivered with the SDK (Ask TW for the URL). Here is a picture of the connector:     .

The pins are as follows: 1=VBat, 2=Reset, 3=Tx, 4=Gnd, 5=Rx, 6=Erase.

Erase must be connected to VBat while the processor is running to erase the firmware and enable the boot loader. Press ON while shorting pins 1&6. Then power off the calculator (reset or battery pull) and turn it on again with ON. Now it is ready to receive commands from MySamba or other programming software.

RE: need help with w34s cable
Instead of asking TW, you can also look at p. 215 (of 244) of the WP 34S Owner's Manual.

And the full flashing procedure including all prerequisites, sidetracks, etc. is completely described in App. A of said manual.

Advantage to those who can read!

Hi, Bruce. There's a thread in the "Not quite HP Calculators - but related" forum that has some ideas about building WP34s cables. That's probably where this discussion belongs anyway. If you're still having trouble getting it to work, I could post more details over there. There are some things that you can get tripped up on. Don't get discouraged. Programming these is quite fun.

You are referring to the printed version 3.2 of the manual? It's not freely available and thus not a suitable reference for a beginner, I'm afraid.

Come on, then look at p. 192 (of 211) of the antecessor of said manual - freely available at sourceforge. Even a beginner can find it. Don't you claim you can't. Undecided

(In German math tests, we call that a "Transferaufgabe". It's usually the last problem of the test and the one you get the most points for solving.)

You got me. Wink
I was looking for the word "serial" in the V3.1 PDF in the hope to find this information. The photo shows that the pinout as seen from the back of the calculator is numbered from right to left while the snapshot from the schematics is from left to right. The latter is obviously a view onto the connector, not onto the board.

RE: need help with w34s cable
Hi all,
. I know I'm dredging up an old thread... but can anyone confirm whether a cable such as the following...

https://www.amazon.com/MagiDeal-PL2303HX...78&sr=8-22

...would work for the flashing the 20b\30b into a 34s?

Thanks
