Blue 50g
Does anybody know how common the blue HP-50g is? Was it released only outside the US?

I believe it is/was available in the US, but hardly anybody bought them. Assuming they were available in the US, they most likely would have been a special order. I won a blue 50g at one of the recent conferences as one of the top prizes. I still find it a little hard to see the shifted items even though I have no colorblindness. I'm not saying I'd trade it for a black one; after all, it's kind of a collector's item. There may be a couple thousand of them, mainly in South American countries such as Brazil, if I'm not mistaken. Brian |

RE: Blue 50g
Thanks, Brian. I did not know they existed until two or three years ago. I finally bought one (2 actually) and one of them just came in today. Collecting is absolutely a dangerous thing. <G>

RE: Blue 50g
I believe they were sold only in Spain, but I do know it was a European country that felt that the unique color would help to bolster sales. No formal word on how well it worked... Oddly, although never sold in the US, at least some of the units came in pkg with English wording.
Brian - I'm a little surprised at your comment about difficulty reading labels as the color scheme used on the blue 50g is generally considered much easier to read with better contrast than a normal (black) 50g. --Bob Prosperi |

RE: Blue 50g
Right. Second hand units are pervasive in local auction sites in Spain.

RE: Blue 50g
I bought two new blue HP-50G some years ago in Germany with German Manuals, one for me, one for a colleague. They had been significantly cheaper than the black ones.

I just noticed that the serial number sticker has been removed. The internal number is CNA1370196. I bought it on TAS from a guy in Venezuela.

We covered this subject a while ago as well, here: http://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-459...t=blue+50g Congratulations on your two new blue calculators acquisition! I spent a fair amount of time hunting for one, because I overlooked them when they were on sell here in Europe. Jose Mesquita RadioMuseum.org member |

Not to me it isn't. The white keys with their black and blue-green lettering stand out a little too much (too bright), making the subdued colors on the keyboard harder to see. Maybe if they had used gray instead of white they would have been a lot more legible. Maybe even dark blue with light lettering. That could have been awesome. I don't care for the light blue used around the display and especially for the back half of the case...it cheapens the appearance. Brian Walsh (6951) [41] <1> |
