Most common calculators in the forum?

Hello!

I really don't know where to start... as I don't even know how many calculators I own. My database program (AppleWorks - an antique in it's own right) gave up on the 795th entry some years ago and I have not had the time and will to transfer my database to a different program (FileMaker Pro, already installed on my computer for years but so far unused). The number must be close to 1000 now.

My collection - which is a rather small one compared to some others around here - has many HP calculators (around 100, some of them double or triple) but many more non-HP ones obviously. I am especially happy to own all 300-series Compucorp/Monroe calculators, something which I am not ever going to achieve with HP, because I simply can not afford to buy the ones I am still missing. Or don't want to as I dislike grey liquid crystal displays very much and therefore never will pay the present asking price for something like an HP42S (one of the HP's I do not have). My extreme dislike for RPL does not want me to spend hard earned money on the missing specimens either (so far, I think, I have (one or more) of HP28C 28S 48SX 48GX and 50 - each of which I quickly powered up so I could tick the box: "working" in my database and thereafter removed the batteries with no intention to ever put them back in again).

My favorite Hp calculators (to generate some entries for the poll above) are the HP25, 19, 67, 97 and 71B (the only LCD model I like).
My favorite non HP calculators are the Ti59, Ti Voyage 200/Ti89 and the Aristo M27, the cutest calculator ever made apart from the HP Woodstocks.
I do not own a Prime (yet) or any of the Swissmicros.

I will make a list, but my collection includes almost all handheld calculators/computers, modules, accessories, books, manuals, pamphlets, peripherals, etc. the HP calculator division has ever produced (including most variations, like HP-35v2, HP-35v3 & HP-35v4 and in multiple quantity)

You asked about calculators I have in my stable, so here goes:

• HP-50G (of course!, used about 50% of the time)
• Casio fx-9750G+ (previously used 40%, down to about 5% after receiving gII)
• Casio fx-9750gII (upgraded with fx-9860gII firmware, works well, 33%).
• Casio fx-82TL, 230-ish functions, 9 vars (10%)
• Casio fx-82MS, 240 functions, 9 vars. (was 30%, down to 0.1%)
• Canon F-809P, 27 vars, 39 formulae and can store user-created formulas. (Yuck calculator, 0.01%)
  

And don't beef that the percentages don't add up to 100%, I'm not all there.

EDIT: swapped around the TL for the MS, now the MS gets the share the TL had.

Now something fishy is going on.

19 x 48G/GX/S/SX/G+ ... ok
18 x 50g ... ok (pfft, the 48 has more numbers because there are different models and it is older)
10 x Prime ... Hmm? What is going on?
20 x 41 C/CX/CL/CV ... so, that is new for me.

I may have missed it completely (I see the 41 topics but I don't read them much). How come that the 41 is so loved? Should I consider a 41 from swissmicro (since the original, I guess, are super expensive and rare)?

While reporting is not bad (I have free42 on 2 android devices, and the prime on 1 windows and 3 android), I in fact specified:

No applications, emulators, and what not, real working calculators only.

I remember the sensation that it was when it came out: I certainly would have bought one if I had the money (i.e. if I hadn't spent it all on the HP 67 and its math library). No surprise to me that it was (and still is) so loved.

I'm not surprised to see the 41 high in the popularity ranking. When it was introduced in 1979, it instantly made all previous programmable calculators obsolete. The HP/TI rivalry ended in an instant and never really returned. And finally, by the time the 41 was superseded by the RPL calculators, PCs had become so cheap that they destroyed the largest market segment for programmable calculators, namely, people who needed something programmable but couldn't afford a computer.

That's how I remember it, anyway. Even though the 48 series were incredibly impressive machines, they never generated the kind of excitement that the 41 had.

You got it right Thomas.
The things that set apart the HP-41 was that is was a system, like Richard Nelson love to say.
You could add modules, peripherals, etc.
You could used it as a calculator, as a controller of electronic equipments, as a data collector in a surveying environment, etc.
It was a small instant on computer in a form of a calculator that you could customize it (software & hardware) on the fly to fit your need.
I have more than 25 x HP-41C/CV/CX/CL in my collection, including 6 x 41CL and 2 x 41CX halfnut that I still use everyday.

There is a difference between what one owns and what one uses on a regular basis.

2 x 50g
2 x 49g+
1 x Prime
1 x 12C

I only use the physical 15C LE on a regular basis, sometimes a 48G.

On iPhone I use Free42 (thanks Thomas!).
On iPad I use HP 15C (mainly because Free42 doesn't do landscape orientation; wink)

The DM42 will be the regular calculator WHEN I CAN GET ONE...

Who cares? I believe you've figured out that the 41 is the most popular HP calculator and that it's neither rare nor expensive on eBay. Also, that the 50g and Prime aren't as popular as you thought they'd be because this is a vintage HP calculator website targeted at HP calculators introduced between 1968 and 1986.

It could be argued that the 12C is the most popular HP calculator as it's been in production for over 30 years, but that's because of the business community and most of us have technical backgrounds and favor the scientific models.

I am currently hunting out the HP 48GX because of my liking to RPL. I also hunting for a HP-15C as I find the Voyager series extremely ingenious and fascinating. I'll have to try a HP 41CV and a HP 42s on a emulator somehow. I hear high praises about these two units and I want to see for myself.
