Yes, it’s a lot of money, but it’s also the rarest of the rare collectible calculators. So, I don’t agree with your implication that someone willing to pay the price is necessarily a sucker. I think the real suckers are people willing to pay $500 for an HP 15c LE.

You can look at it two ways.

If you look at it as a 45-year-old bug-ridden calculator then I would agree that you'd need to be one hell of a sucker to buy it.

If, on the other hand, you look at it as a unique and irreplaceable piece of computing history then you really wish you had 5 grand knocking about somewhere. I certainly do!

There are many other interesting deals, for example $2.000.000 for a tiny piece of old paper with blue print and many others :-)

If I had $5k knocking about, that HP-35 would no longer be on TAS. What's more, I'd fly to Prague to collect it in person!

I was in Prague last summer. I only found 2 East German calculators not even the shadow of an HP. Sure they store them in safes. Wink

I found the correct amount: 100$ = 77.15$ + 22.85$ shipping.

An HP38G+ bought on eBay for the price of an HP38G, i.e not much. I can understand the seller not knowing what they had, but was surprised that no collector had noticed it. Waiting for the auction to end was excruciating!

There's a picture in the thread here for those unfamiliar with this rarity - only 3 or 4 known to exist.

And before you ask, I swapped it (with a much more obsessive^Wdedicated collector than I) for a mint Casio 601P - something that I had lusted after at school but could never afford. So a double 'best deal', IMHO.

I made the best deal every time I bought a new HP-41.

Best calculator ever! I have never regretted what I payed for one. Excellent value for the money and all (4) bought new at asked list price.

I could not agree more. Despite the things that HP could have done better, had they had a crystal ball; it was and is simply without compare.

My best deal was a working HP-21 for 1 Euro ( 1,18 $) on a flee market, a HP-22 for free and a TI-59 for free.

My best deal so far has been a HP 15C for € 20, sold as not working, it only had dead batteries. Works like a champion!

My second best is my 50G, bought new a few years ago for €60, now on ebay you can find those used for over 200-250 €!

On kleinanzeigen in Germany there are always a couple around 50 euro.

Anyway little obervation. What I am going to say is valid for everything that is still funktioning though.

It is really a pity to see truckloads of seemingly working, the TI that are quite common, really ignored. While finding a 50g around 50 euro could be hard, I could buy 3 ti89 with 15 euro. The problem is, what do I do with them then? I already have one and I barely use it (same for the ti nspire, that is clumsy to get lua answers back to the pc). I want to use what I have.

Same for other common TI calculators. It seems the same with other common producers (to be honest, casio and TI are way more common than HP and sharp)
