circa 1980 Casio with clock, similar to fx-8100
This might be better in a Casio forum, but I don't know them, so will try here, thanks…

Does anyone know of a Casio calculator from the 1978–1982 period that combined a scientific calculator with a date/time/alarm/calendar clock function?

I can find the fx-8100, which is almost right, but not quite how I remember it. The one I'm remembering was also in a folding wallet with a cut-out, and had a toggle switch for clock/calc modes, but I remember the screen being taller , i.e. more square.

ring a bell with anyone?

thanks…

It's a good question as the Casio calculators of the time '78-'82 that ruled the roost (FX-50xP/FX-60xP) certainly didn't (I had an FX-602P until recently).

There was the hybrid CQ series with alarms/time (CQ-1/CQ-81) but they were of course not Scientific, but do fit the time period (well at least the CQ-81 does, the -1 was probably '76/'77). One would assume it would have been from this series?

Not exactly the form factor you are looking for but there is the Casio CFX series of Scientific Calculator Watches introduced in 1983.

thanks; I'm not sure: the CQ seem to be desktop.

The one I'm remembering was definitely in a wallet (portrait-style) with (I think) a cut-out to see the time with the wallet closed, like the fx-8100. In fact the fx-8100 is very similar, but for some reason its display doesn't ring a bell with me like I was expecting. I have a strong memory of one from my secondary school days in Scotland, which limits it to 78–82. That would also mean it must have been scientific, e.g. fx series, for school maths use. I suspect also that it wouldn't have been programmable either.

I'm assuming it was Casio. I saw a Sharp EL-401 with a screen more like I remember, but it's not scientific, and for some reason I was convinced it was a Casio (all I owned for decades, though school/univ/work, until belatedly discovering RPN/RPL/HP recently).

CQ-1 most definitely, CQ-81 however...

But I agree, likely not the CQ series... so that leaves the classic Casio designation for Scientific's the "FX" series. Assuming the FX-50xP and FX-80 were the first (and yellow) Scientific LCD's by Casio (I think) this leaves the period 1981/1982 for an LCD Scientific with time - when the FX-60xP/FX-81 were launched, can't think of anything offhand. Interesting if there was.

I'm far from a Casio expert. However given your school period I'm about a decade ahead (late 80's/early 90's) in reasonable recall (although I live in Edinburgh!).

If the LCD was "yellow" that would date the Casio from '77(possibly)/'78 to '79/'80 however, but Casio produced relatively few LCD devices in that time period and after '80 all were of the more conventional variety. Before '79 I think most were that fluorescent blue thingy (nice by the way).

I really need to look more into Casio Calculator history ))

yup, agreed, thanks.

Perhaps it was the 8100; the period is right, and it's /close/ to what I remember. The 8000 is similar but I don't remember it having the yellow screen-cover.

I'll see if I can pick up an 8100 Smile

thanks.

There are 4 scientific models with time functionality: FX-6100, FX-7100, FX-8000 and FX-8100.

The yellow LCD FX-8000 offers stopwatch and countdown only.

The FX-6100 and FX-7100 offer time, alarm, stopwatch and countdown.

The FX-8100 offers time, date, alarm, stopwatch and countdown.

thank you, that's very helpful.

Looks like it must have been the fx-8100, then, although my memory doesn't quite gel with it.

Perhaps I'm also remembering a different make (horror!).

thanks again, all.

This one has only the four operations + stop watch, laps, etc., in very stylish design, that's why I bought one

that's nice! I see from google that it even had a plastic door protecting the lower keys, clearly removable.

This isn't the one you're thinking of, but it's one of my prized possessions, since it's one of the very first calculators I ever bought. Used it as my daily alarm clock for a few years! No scientific functions, though. Still works perfectly. This image was scanned just a few minutes ago.

EDIT: Oh my goodness, I almost forgot another oldie, which is the MOST ACCURATE timepiece I have (except for the HP-41CX when its AF is set, of course!). This image was scanned just now. This goodie wakes me up every morning, and has done so for many, many years!

both excellent! I like the analogue effect on the second Smile

Do they cope with the Y2000 date? OR are they time only?

I read that the FX-[678][01]00 series can't cope with dates > 1999.

NB: that trick doesn't work unless every year in the interval that's a multiple of 4 is a leap year.

The latest turn of the century was 2000, which was a leap year (multiple of 400) but 1900 was not and 2100 won't be!

Interesting I didn't know about those models. Really is a pity there isn't (I don't think) a comprehensive list of Casio Calculators by date.

There is this http://www.rskey.org/CMS/index.php/exhibit-hall/94 for the programmables that some may find of interest. Would like to see similar for all their devices Smile

You could always go back to current year minus 400, except the calculator probably wouldn't like that either! (There are exactly 20871 weeks in 400 years of the Gregorian calendar, so the sequence of leap years and day of week that January 1 falls on repeats every 400 years.)

Does anyone know of a Casio calculator from the 1978–1982 period that combined a scientific calculator with a date/time/alarm/calendar clock function?

Casio had their "Melody" series (ML-80, ML-81, ML-75, maybe more) which combined a clock with alarms, stopwatch, countdown timer, and mini-musical keyboard with a landscape format calculator. BUT, as far as I know, for all these, it had a typical 5 functions + memory, not a scientific calculator.

For years my mom carried an ML-80 (the first one) in her purse from the late 1970s. Over the Thanksgiving holiday, I found it and threw some new batteries in it. Still works great! The sound of the ML-80 was a bit "razzy", but the later models had purer tones. I've looked a bit and I don't see Melody model with a scientific calculator, though.
