Sounds a bit funny.
Definetly not a "feature". Have you tried to connect it to your PC with the Connkit open? It should take the time and date from your PC. Then, if the battery is OK, it should keep the time/date for however how long as log as the battery doesn't turn depleted. I've had mine in off state for more than 3 weeks without losing time/date and the battery has held it's charge throughout.
