I never realized the early 3-cell models could not be powered from the USB cable. I've used the cable (for transfer) of course, and have always assumed it was the same as the later models.

I imagine the same is true for the 48gII 3- and 4-cell versions as well.

@cdmackay - The 48gII is another model you can safely skip, though these are also quite cheap and have the best color scheme (clear and easiest to read and to my eye, best looking) of any of the 49/50 series models.
