You could read the HP-48 FAQ on hpcalc.org and see how many bugs the HP-48 had from the beginning, causing all kind of complete memory losses. The developers went through a number of firmware upgrades to eliminate (all?) of these serious memory destroying bugs.

The difference is, there was no chance for a firmware update. Those developers around Dr. Wickes weren't perfect either.
