My recommendation is a 2-cable solution:

• Buy an HP48-to-Serial cable (ex: https://www.ebay.com/itm/HP-Connectivity...3362719100)
• Buy a Serial-to-USB cable
  

The reason for doing this is that there is no standard spec for serial over USB. This results in companies making proprietary chips with proprietary drivers that go out-of-date when they stop supporting them (ex: like what happened to some HP48-direct-to-USB cables). Thus, as your older Serial-to-USB cables become unsupported, you can just go out an buy a new replacement for dirt-cheap prices.
