I agree; as you described above is reasonable and is as consistent as possible, given that either way it's a bit of inventing something slightly different.

Of all the ways one might want to use the stack dump mode, I think the only practical option is if you can capture the output (like with ILPer) to analyze later, but that's 30+ years after the fact, so surely not what they had in mind.
